It’s been a busy couple of weeks in Everett!

We wrapped up another successful Clean Everett Day, with hundreds of residents dropping off trash and yard waste and many pitching in at community cleanups across the city. Thank you to everyone who volunteered their time to help keep Everett beautiful.

We also celebrated the grand opening of Lowell Park's brand-new playground, a crucial improvement to this great space enjoyed by many local families.

And, of course, we welcomed thousands of visitors for another fantastic Sorticulture weekend! Despite some challenging weather around the region, the rain/hail mostly held off and the community showed up in full force to support our artists, gardeners, local businesses and downtown Everett.

I’m grateful for the volunteers, staff, sponsors and community members who help make events like these possible. Everett truly shines when we work together. 💙

Congratulations to Everett Silvertips Hockey Club on an incredible run and thank you for giving Everett so much to celebrate! The season may not have ended how we hoped, but the team gave our community so much to be proud of this season: from capturing the franchise's first ever WHL championship to advancing to the Memorial Cup for the first time in team history. Every player showed incredible talent, resilience and heart.

I also want to thank the coaches, staff, families that host players, and the thousands of fans who packed the arena all season long!

GO TIPS!!!

A big thank you to County Councilmembers Jared Mead and Nate Nehring for inviting me to be on a panel during this year's Building Bridges Summit. Our discussion reinforced something I strongly believe: the challenges facing our communities are complex, and none of us can solve them alone. Whether we’re talking about public safety, housing, economic development, or helping people in crisis, the best solutions come about when we work together and are willing to listen to one another.

Light rail to Everett matters: for our residents, our economy and the future of our region.

I shared this op-ed in yesterday’s Everett Herald because I believe strongly that completing the regional “spine” and bringing light rail to Everett is one of the most important investments we can make for the next generation.

Snohomish County residents have been contributing to regional transit for decades, and Everett Link remains one of the most cost-effective and high-ridership projects in the entire ST3 plan. This investment will help connect people to jobs, support housing growth, reduce congestion and create more opportunity across our community.

I’m continuing to advocate every step of the way to ensure Everett stays on track and to explore opportunities to bring light rail here even faster.

Thank you to everyone who has continued speaking up in support of transit, housing and regional connectivity. We still have work to do, and your voices matter.

The op-ed is linked here: https://www.heraldnet.com/2026/05/25/mayor-franklin-prioritizing-everett-link-makes-sense-locally-and-regionally/

Full text here:
“Over the past several months, as a member of Sound Transit’s Board of Directors, I have been working with County Executive Dave Somers (chair of the board) and Lynnwood council member David Parshall to fulfill the commitment of bringing light rail to Everett that was first envisioned back in 1996. Leaders at that time anchored a long-range plan around a future light rail system that would connect Puget Sound’s job centers across three counties — what we now refer to as the “spine”.

As Sound Transit faces a $35 billion funding gap, future light rail stations and other investments are all being considered for delay, redesign, or elimination. To the surprise of no one, I have been a vocal advocate for the Everett Link Extension. I’m an advocate not only because I am mayor, but because the investment is rooted in sound policy and financial sense. We must complete the spine for both local and regional benefits.

As of today, I am pleased to report that the Sound Transit board chair’s plan includes no cuts and no delays to completing the six stations in Snohomish County and Everett. But we need to hold the line and continue to make our case to the public and the board.

Affordability. First and foremost, compared to the ballooning costs of other parts of the system, light rail to Everett is affordable in Sound Transit’s budget. Our project remains one of the most cost-effective across the entire system envisioned in ST3. Snohomish County taxpayers have been paying into regional transit since 1997 – a nearly three-decades commitment that deserves to be honored. As the board makes difficult prioritization decisions, completing light rail to Everett is a matter of keeping faith with a community that has long invested in the regional system. We have waited patiently to see that investment realized.

Equity. Fast, frequent and reliable transit is one of the most effective tools we have to advance equity across our region. Everett has the most diverse working-class population of any city within Snohomish County. Future light rail will connect our South Everett communities with job centers and provide for new economic opportunities across our neighborhoods. With housing costs and gas prices rising, light rail can offer meaningful economic relief.

Economic Development and Growth. With nearly 30,000 daily riders projected, Everett Link has the second highest projected ridership of any line in the ST3 plan. Everett alone is expected to grow by 65,000 residents over the next 20 years.

Today 116,000 Snohomish County residents commute into King County daily versus 36,000 going the opposite direction. The region as a whole will benefit from this investment. The spine is critical to managing congestion as we grow.

Housing and opportunity. Over the past decade, we have witnessed how light rail stations transform communities. From the University District, to Northgate and Lynnwood, new housing now provides opportunities to live near excellent transit service. The benefits of light rail also reach our bus transit riders on Community Transit’s feeder system. We can all imagine the new opportunities for housing and jobs in South and Downtown Everett and near all the new light rail stations as they come online.

At times, Sound Transit board conversations have been tense. Not surprisingly, boardmembers are fighting fiercely for their communities, even as they balance regional priorities. The package in front of the board today isn’t perfect, but the Everett Link stays on track. After this vote, I will continue to do everything in my power to get light rail here even faster. We will explore possibilities to accelerate the timelines as the Everett light rail project advances.

The current proposal has our new stations well positioned. I hope Everett and Snohomish County residents will join me in advocating for what I believe is best for us locally and in the best interest of our entire region’s future.”

Editor’s Note: The Sound Transit Board of Directors is expected to take a final vote on the new budget alignment for ST3 known as the “Enterprise Initiative” at 1:30 p.m. on Thursday, May 28. Memorial Day is a time to pause, reflect and honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice — and the families who continue to carry that loss. Their courage, service and sacrifice will never be forgotten.

Last week, I was honored to join Snohomish County Council Memorial Day ceremony as we remembered the brave men and women who gave their lives in service to our country. Thank you to the County Council for bringing us together, Deputy Executive Patton for joining us, and the Lynnwood Times for coordinating this opportunity to honor our fallen heroes.

Freedom is never free. It's our responsibility to carry on the legacy of those who paid the ultimate price - upholding the values they stood for: service, duty and love of country🇺🇸

This week's Community Solutions Showcase was a powerful reminder that addressing homelessness and housing instability takes all of us working together. Thank you to the Partnership to End Homelessness, Everett Gospel Mission, service providers, outreach teams (like our amazing CARE team), healthcare professionals, housing partners, advocates, faith leaders and community organizations who are doing this work every single day across Everett and Snohomish County.

One of the biggest takeaways from the conversations at this event: this work is complex, deeply interconnected and no one organization or jurisdiction can solve it alone. Real progress requires partnership, coordination and a shared commitment to supporting people with dignity while creating long-term stability.
I’m grateful for opportunities like this that help bring people together, build understanding and highlight the important work happening throughout our community.

This EMS Week, I want to recognize our Everett Fire Department firefighters, paramedics and EMTs who answer our community's calls for service every day - providing lifesaving care with skill, compassion and dedication.

Last year, our team responded to more than 21,000 EMS calls - with these calls now making up over 80% of Everett Fire's dispatches. And behind every call is a team ready to help when people need it most.

Their work makes a difference in the lives of our residents every day. Please join me in thanking Everett Fire and our regional Fire/EMS partners for their dedicated service!

Thank you to everyone who joined Councilmember Burbano, Chief Goetz and me at the Everett Public Library Evergreen Branch for our District 4 Town Hall on Saturday! We had a great turnout, thoughtful questions and a really productive conversation about the issues and projects that matter most.

These district community meetings are an important opportunity for us to hear directly from residents, share updates and connect with neighbors across Everett.

We still have two more town halls coming up in June:
- District 1 Townhall, June 2, 2026, 6:30 p.m. at the Everett Performing Arts Center
- District 5 Townhall, June 9, 2026, 6:30 p.m. at the Everett Police Department South Precinct

Hope to see many of you there!
