Vote-by-mail is a safe, secure and accessible way to vote. Snohomish County and Washington state voters have been successfully voting by mail for the last 17 years. Washington's vote-at-home system is built on decades of experience, careful planning, and efficient election administration. Ballots are treated as 1st Class mail and Snohomish County Elections actively works with our local U.S. Postal Service officials to monitor the mailing and return of ballots.

A multi-step process protects our ballots. Elections staff specially trained by the Washington State Patrol to identify handwriting similarities and differences compare the images of voters' signatures on ballot envelopes to the signatures in their voter registration records to make sure they match. All ballots remain sealed in their return envelopes until signatures are matched. Only when the signatures are matched are ballot envelopes then opened and contents separated in three steps to protect the secrecy of voters' choices.
Step 1 - remove the secrecy sleeves containing the voted ballots from the return envelopes
Step 2 - remove the voted ballots from their secrecy sleeves
Step 3 - unfold and inspect ballots for voter corrections, damage, or unclear voter marks that could cause potential scanning issues.
Once inspection is complete, the ballots are placed into a ballot box and moved into the vote-counting system.

Rooted in the movement that secured the right to vote for women, the League has worked to foster civic engagement and enhance access to the vote since our organization was founded in 1920. We work closely with the Elections Office here in Snohomish County so know firsthand about the several layers of physical security systems and protocols in place to protect ballots, elections equipment, personnel, and observers, including 24/7 surveillance feeds, designated security and equipment zones, and controlled access systems. Today, July 27th, is the last day to register for the August 4th election online or by mail. Votewa.gov is the place to send any friends, neighbors, family, people off the street who still need to register. Or they can pick up a form at the library, but need to mail it today. Our vote is our power.
