Community Announcement:

7th STATE of THE HAITIAN COMMUNITY in EVERETT Community Meeting

Date: June 4, 2022 @ 5:pm

After a careful analysis patiently and thoroughly conducted and a bombardement of outcries on the impact of the recent news on racist jokes and behaviors specifically targeting the Haitian community, the Everett Haitian Community Center, by a mutual agreement with several concerned leaders - partners throughout the state of Massachusetts plans to convene an emergency 🆘 convention drawing together impacted and concerned residents on this issue beyond its previous public statement that it had made at the onset of the publications of the horrific racial jokes incident.

While our Annual “ State of the Haitian Community In Everett Meeting” always takes place in August, due to the critical circumstances, will convene on June 4th.

“The body of Christ was designed to be on the forefront of the conversations about race. The body of Christ has been called to speak out against oppression, defend the marginalized, live as peacemakers and lead their communities in reconciliation and transformative change.”

Today, the City of Everett in partnership with the Everett Haitian Community Center celebrated our 5th Annual Haitian Flag Raising in honor of Haitian Flag Day.

The City of Everett has always been a welcoming place for all and as your Mayor, I promise it will continue to be.
Last week, we celebrated the Black Excellence on the Hill awards! I was honored to nominate my friend Revered Myrlande DesRosiers of the Everett Haitian Community Center, as well as Kyéra Sterling, Mark Martinez, and Maia Raynor of Beacon BLOC (nominated in partnership with my friend State Senator Sonia Chang-Díaz).

Rev. Myrlande has always been a force within our community, but she has truly gone above and beyond during this pandemic to ensure that our community has the resources we need and that our COVID-19 response is truly equitable. Everett is very fortunate to have her as a leader within our community.

In addition to the great work they do as legislative staff in the State House, Kyéra, Mark, and Maia helped found Beacon BLOC in 2020, with the mission to build a racial justice-centered staff community at the State House. We are lucky to have their vision and dedication to making the People’s House a welcoming place for everyone.

This morning, the Governor announced the award of Health Resources in Action (HRiA) COVID-19 Community Grants to community and faith-based organizations across the Commonwealth, with organizations serving Malden awarded just over $80,000. These organizations include Everett Haitian Community Center, Massachusetts Alliance of Portuguese Speakers, and New American Association of MA. These funds will help to build capacity and implement community interventions to minimize the spread of COVID-19 in communities experiencing the greatest inequities during the ongoing pandemic.

Grantees will build on the efforts of local and state officials, along with the Commonwealth's public messaging campaign to ensure that all residents of the Commonwealth have access to the information they need to keep themselves and members of their community safe.

Go to Mass.gov/StopCOVID19 for more information on how to keep you and your loved ones safe!
