Since we ask people for money, here is what you can check about us without having to ask us.

We are a Massachusetts 501(c)(3). The EIN is 41-2740196, and that number lets you look us up on the IRS exempt organisations list and read the filings yourself. We hold a Candid Silver Seal of Transparency, which is not an award, it only means somebody sat down and filled in the public profile honestly. Our SAM.gov registration is active.

And here is what we are not, because people assume otherwise when a website looks organised. We are not a treatment programme. We do not provide clinical care or case management. We are not MASH certified. I would rather write that on a Sunday than have somebody discover it later and wonder what else was left out.

Three questions families ask me on the phone, and the honest answers.

Can you hold a bed until Thursday. No. Beds fill in the order men apply, qualify and complete approval, and if I held one for you I would be holding it against somebody who applied before you. I know that is not what anybody wants to hear on a Saturday morning.

Will you tell me how he is doing. No, and you should be wary of anywhere that says yes. He is an adult and what he tells you is his to tell. What I will talk to you about is the house. The rules, the fee, the testing, what happens when a rule gets broken.

Is it safe. Come and look. 940 Broadway in Everett, Monday to Friday, nine to five. Call or text 617-888-3581. Walk through a house on a day nobody tidied it for you, and bring him if he will come.

There is a fourth question that almost nobody asks, and it is the one I would ask. What happens if he loses his job in January and cannot pay the fee that week. Ask that everywhere you look, not only here. The answer tells you what kind of place you are standing in.

A Friday note for three groups of people who read this page, because I know some of you do.

Case managers, discharge planners, court staff, reentry workers. The application is online and takes about ten minutes. Beds fill in the order men apply, qualify and complete approval, so I cannot hold one for a Thursday discharge. What I can do is give you a straight answer the same day you ask, including when the answer is no, and tell you who else to try. We do not offer anything of value for a referral and we never will. The only thing on the table is a phone that gets picked up.

Employers in Everett, Malden, Chelsea and Medford. Men in early recovery are looking for work, and most of them carry a gap on a CV and something on a record. If you have hired in that situation before, you already know how it usually goes. If you have not, and you would be willing to interview someone, I would like to hear from you.

Agents, brokers, developers and homeowners with a property that might suit. We lease as a local charity, we pay on time, and we look after buildings better than most tenants because we have to. Email me directly rather than going through the website.

The heat came on in two of the houses this week for the first time since spring. One boiler fired on the first try. The other one did not, and I spent most of Tuesday morning on the phone with the man who has fixed it twice already and will probably fix it again in February.

Nobody writes the heating bill into a mission statement. After rent it is the second biggest thing we pay for, it climbs in October, and it does not come back down until April. There is no grant category called boilers.

That is most of what this job is, and it is not the part people imagine. A phone call about a boiler. A landlord who needs an answer by Friday. A smoke detector that chirps at four in the morning until somebody stands on a chair.

The houses have to be boring and warm and predictable. That is the entire product. Everything interesting about recovery happens somewhere else, and it only happens if the boring part holds.

What is on those lists is not inspiring. Twin sheets, because a man arrives with a bag and the bed has to be made that night. Towels. Pillows. Mattress protectors. Shower curtains. Toilet paper in the quantity five houses actually get through. Cleaning supplies. Test cups.

Here is why some weeks I would rather have the sheets than the cash. A gift lands in an account, and then somebody has to sit down and decide what it buys, and that decision costs an evening I do not have. A box of towels turning up at the door has already made the decision. It goes in a cupboard and it gets used, and nobody has to think about it again until the cupboard is empty.

If you have been meaning to do something and never got round to it, this is the version that takes four minutes and arrives as an object.

What a week in one of the houses actually looks like, since people ask and the website only half answers it.

You share a furnished room. The fee is weekly and covers utilities, so no bill turns up that you were not expecting. There is a house manager. There is a list of chores with your name against some of them. You are expected at house meetings, and you are expected at your own meetings outside the house, and nobody is going to drive you there.

Drug and alcohol testing is random and it is not a formality.

The rules are short and they are not negotiable, and the reason is not discipline for its own sake. The whole thing only works if every man in the house can assume the others are keeping them. That assumption is the actual product. Not the furniture.

Beds are open in Everett.

Structured sober housing for men in recovery. A furnished shared room, utilities included, a house manager, written house rules, chores, house meetings and random drug testing. The part that will not fit on a list is the other men in the house, who will notice by the third day if you stop coming downstairs.

The application is online and takes about ten minutes. Today is a holiday, so the form is the faster route than the phone. Beds fill in the order people apply, qualify and complete approval, and applying does not guarantee a placement. I would rather write that plainly than have somebody sitting by a phone for a week building a plan on a maybe.

Recovery Month was September. It is the middle of October now, and the number of men in this state who need somewhere safe to sleep tonight has not moved at all.

The thing I would want anybody outside this work to understand is the sequence. Detox is days. A programme is weeks. Then a man walks out of a building with a bag and a discharge plan and roughly one day of momentum, and where he sleeps that night decides most of what happens after. Send him back to the same couch, or to nowhere, and the public money that paid for the detox and the programme has been spent for nothing.

Housing is one of the cheapest links in that chain. It is also the one with the fewest people lining up to fund it, because there is nothing dramatic to photograph. A made bed in an empty room is not a story.

It is still the whole job.

Things worth checking while you are there. Whether the kitchen is clean on a day nobody expected you. Whether the house rules are written down and posted somewhere, not just described. Whether there is a house manager you can put a name to. Whether anyone will give you a straight answer about what happens when somebody breaks a rule.

Ask us those about any sober home, not only this one.

Bring him with you if he will come. He is the one who has to live there.

A note for the case managers, discharge planners, court staff and reentry workers who read this page. I know some of you do.

Here is what I can tell you honestly. Five houses in Everett, fifty-six beds, structured sober housing for men in recovery. The online application takes about ten minutes. Beds fill in the order people apply, qualify and complete approval, so I cannot promise you a bed on a Thursday for a man leaving on a Thursday.

What I can promise is a straight answer the same day you ask, instead of a maybe that costs your client a week of planning. If there is nothing, I will say there is nothing and tell you who else to try.

We cannot offer you anything for a referral and we would not try to. The only thing on the table is a phone that gets picked up.
