Village of Evergreen Park

Village of Evergreen Park Welcome to the official page for Evergreen Park, Illinois! The population at the time was approximately 500 people. Route 12 and U.S. The U.S.

Almost one hundred and twenty years ago, while other towns surrounding Chicago were requesting
annexation to survive, Evergreen Park boldly decided to declare its independence. Fifty-one residents turned out on December 20, 1893 when forty of them voted for incorporation
and the area became the Village of Evergreen Park. Many of the original settlers were hard working farm families. From these hu

mble beginnings, Evergreen Park has become a thriving residential suburb located astride 95th Street (U.S. Route 20) adjacent to the attractive Beverly Hills section of Chicago and seventeen miles southwest of the Loop. The Village encompasses an area of approximately four square miles and is bordered by the City of Chicago on the north, south and east, and by the Village of Oak Lawn on the west. Evergreen Park is known as the "Village of Churches" as evidenced by the thirteen established religious congregations serving the community. Census of 2010 shows the population of the Village at 20,000.

A Message from Mayor Kelly Burke

Hello Neighbors,

Last week I had the honor of presenting the State of the Village address at the monthly luncheon of the Evergreen Park Senior Council, providing updates on business, events, and public safety.
In 2022, the Village approved 35 business licenses, with Chili’s and the combo of Macy’s Backstage and Market by Macy’s being the newest big additions. There is more to come in 2023 with the new Subaru dealership, a wine bar, and Biggby Coffee expected to open. Bringing in new business continues to be a top priority and the Village will focus on improving the amenities and services that businesses find attractive.

We are very lucky to have a fantastic Police Department and Fire Department here in the Village. They do an outstanding job serving our residents each and every day. Just like many industries, hiring has been a challenge and the Village is willing to make policy adjustments and participate in intern and training programs to find new qualified employees.

Safe driving through our Village streets is an understandable concern for our residents. The Village was recently awarded a grant through the AAA Auto Club Group to purchase six new solar speed signs. We will also be working with the Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning this spring and summer on a traffic safety study. Stay tuned for more information as it becomes available.

In terms of events, the Village returned to pre-pandemic levels in 2022. We added a new food truck event in Klein Park that exceeded our expectations. It will return this year along with all of the community favorites of Flake Fest, Independence Day Parade and Fireworks, Labor Day Concert and Fireworks, Oktoberfest, and Dickens Fest.

This summer, residents can expect a repaving project on 99th St between Western and California, the replacement of a water main along 95th St from Western to Kedzie, and the replacement of an antiquated water lift station at 91st and Richmond.

The garbage and recycling contract between Waste Management and the Village recently expired. Waste Management’s renewal rate for a new 5-year contract was higher than we thought was reasonable. We extended the contract for one year only and will issue a request for proposal in mid-2023 to give other companies the opportunity to bid on garbage and recycling services in the Village. Unfortunately, in the meantime residents will see an increase in their quarterly garbage pick-up bill from $74.52 to $92.13. We expect that amount will decrease once we have a competitive bid.

Finally, community input is an important component of serving as your Mayor. I invite feedback from both residents and business owners on what you would like to see for Evergreen Park. Please contact me at 708-422-1551 or [email protected] with any feedback, questions, or concerns.

A significant winter storm is expected for Thursday and Friday - with bitter cold to follow through Sunday. Please be prepared.

5am Tuesday, 12/20: One complicating factor with this winter storm is that it is going to be dangerously cold not only after the snow ends, but also as heavy snow and potentially blizzard conditions are ongoing. Wind chill readings will drop to near 30 degrees below zero as early as Friday morning. Once the snow stops later Friday, dangerous cold will continue through the holiday weekend.

A Message from Mayor Kelly Burke

Hello Neighbors,

Chilly weather and the holiday season are bursting onto the scene here in the Village. It is an exciting time of the year and I have been enjoying all the wonderful events and activities that are happening around Evergreen Park this month.

The season kicked off with A Dickens Christmas on December 3. Despite the colder temperatures, families came out to visit with Santa and enjoy all the festive activities. Thank you to the Recreation Department, Office of Citizens’ Services, Youth Department, Public Works, and the Police and Fire Departments who once again came together for a successful event. And of course, I have to thank Santa for taking the time to come to Evergreen Park to hear the wishes of all the children.

The Annual Tree Lighting followed Dickens Christmas fest. The EPCHS Madrigal Singers delighted the crowd with their traditional holiday carols; the beautifully decorated tree in the park was thanks to our Parks foreman, Bill Green, and his crew. I hope you are able to take some time to visit Klein Park to see it for yourself. It will be up all season.

As a community, we have so many examples of our residents embracing the holiday spirit and I am grateful for the generosity of our Evergreen Park community. The donations to our Village Pantry have allowed us to help our neighbors in need. The boxes for the Youth Department’s annual coat drive were overflowing, and donations continue to come in for Toys for Tots (donations will be accepted until December 20). Village employees have pitched in and generously helped several local families in need with financial assistance as well.

May the magic of the season fill your heart with love, your home with joy, and your life with laughter. Happy Holidays to all!

Be prepared for the potential impact to holiday travel later this week.
12/19/2022

Be prepared for the potential impact to holiday travel later this week.

A strong winter storm will impact the western Great Lakes region Thursday into Saturday with snow and strong winds. The worst conditions are expected Thursday evening into Friday evening, with blizzard conditions possible during this time. While specific details in the storm track and resultant snowfall amounts still need to be refined over the coming days, confidence in severe winter weather impacts to northern Illinois and northwest Indiana continues to increase. If possible, those traveling Thursday through Friday should begin to consider alternate travel plans. Regardless of the intensity of the storm, bitterly cold arctic air and strong winds will result in dangerously low wind chills Friday into Christmas.

A MESSAGE FROM MAYOR BURKE

“It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas. . .”

So begins one of our most popular carols; it conjures up images of the simple Christmases we see in the movies. You know, "Miracle on 34th Street", "It’s A Wonderful Life", "A Christmas Story", any movie on the Hallmark channel. The list goes on and on.

But as we know, life is not simple, and that is why we find those nostalgic images of Christmas so comforting. . ..especially with the things that are going on in the world today.

For Christians, Christmas commemorates the birth of Jesus. We celebrate the season by surrounding ourselves with our family and enjoying the time with those we love. We remember the trek of the wise men by bearing gifts to the people who are so special in our lives. We sing, we laugh, we hug, and remember to bow our heads for a brief moment in thanks for all we have.

As a community, we have so many examples of our residents embracing that spirit during the season and I am grateful for the generosity of our Evergreen Park community. The donations towards our Village Pantry have allowed us to help our neighbors in need. Community “cabinets” have popped up around town as well.

Members of our Village family have stepped in to help our neighbors. The Evergreen Park Fire Department recently took part in a “Lights and Ladders” program, helping put up lights on the houses of families affected by cancer. Our own administration office spearheaded an “Adopt A Family” campaign, collecting donations for families in need, as has our Evergreen Park Police Department. Our Youth Department recently completed a very successful coat drive. The Toys For Tots boxes in the Village Hall and Community Center were overflowing.

We have a wonderful Village and I am thankful for the opportunity to be a part of it. Please remember that we are here to serve you.

Our Recreation Department has been carefully planning our Winter/Spring programs, and their updated program book is on our website now. I am happy to report that, in the new year, you will be able to register for programs online! Be watching for that soon!

My wish is for you all to have a wonderful, Merry Christmas and a happy holiday weekend. Please celebrate safely and do all those things to stay healthy, all those things that we are weary of hearing but so important to remember.

Take some time to pile the family in the car and tour around the neighborhood to take in the beautiful lighted decorations that homeowners have worked so hard to display.

Remember, though. . . .the prettiest sight you’ll see is the holly that will be on your own front door.

Merry Christmas!

Mayor Kelly Burke

More than likely, as you begin to decorate (or you may have done so already), you may find strings of lights that are not working. Instead of throwing them away, we recommend that you recycle them.

Waste Management has provided us with some recycle boxes and you will find one at the Village Hall (9418 S. Kedzie Ave) and two at the Community Center (3450 W. 97th Street).

This program will continue through mid-January, so please, let's keep these out of the trash heaps ~
