Women's, Gender, & Sexuality Studies at TCNJ

Women's, Gender, & Sexuality Studies at TCNJ The Women's, Gender & Sexuality Studies major is interdisciplinary. Some courses focus specifically on the roles of women, their contributions, and experiences.
(2)

The courses enable students to understand changing social patterns and the effects of institutions and culture on behavior. Courses explore how gender shapes social roles and identities, as well as the function of race, class, and sexuality in the experience of gender within and across cultures. Other Women's and Gender Studies courses study the impact of women and gender on various cultures at va

rious times, and enable students to understand and evaluate changing social patterns and the effects of institutions and cultural assumptions. From a Women's and Gender Studies perspective, the construct of gender difference is fundamental to the organization of human relations. The more aware one becomes of gender, the more one's view of the world of relationships changes, and the better able one is to make intelligent choices. When a gender lens is added to a traditional one, a broader and deeper understanding of the world appears. The major prepares students for a variety of professional and graduate schools, as well as positions in corporations, government agencies, and service industries.

“I will be graduating as a double major in biology and women's, gender, and sexuality studies. I am in WILL, Triota, and the Honors & Scholars Program. Being a part of the WGSS department has been a wonderful experience because it has made me more curious and understanding, both personally and professionally, about institutional discrimination, and the friends and faculty I have encountered have made me passionate to pursue a career in healthcare. I loved my time as a WGSS major and will use everything I have learned as I continue my education this fall at the State University of New York, College of Optometry to receive my Doctorate in Optometry. Thank you for everything WGSS Department! “ - Siya

Siya, we are happy to hear that you have enjoyed your time as a WGSS major. SUNY will be lucky to have you as a student in the fall! We are so proud of you!

On Friday, April 19 the WGSS Archive Fellows shared their work on the WGSS Archive Project -- a small physical collection and a big digitized collection of interviews, historical documents, recorded events, material culture, and so much more -- at the Annual Pelson Lecture event.

Congratulations to the WGSS Archive Fellows -- from the past 3 years -- who made this amazing work happen. What a joy it has been to work with you all.

Thank you to everyone who sat for an interview, donated mementos, photos, and are now serving as mentors to our students!

The WGSS Archive Project was made possible through the Barbara Meyers Pelson '59 Endowed Chairship.

A new WGSS/PBH course at TCNJ is training students to become doulas and help support Black mothers. "Foundations in Community Birthwork: The Doula Method" taught by Natasha Patterson, associate professor of public health, and Ria Rodney ’08, an adjunct faculty member in Women's, Gender, and Sexuality studies, students explore contemporary social issues related to childbirth in the U.S. and get hands-on experience with doula practices.

Upon completing this course, students will receive a certificate from DONA, the leading organization for doula practice, and be eligible to pursue NJ Medicaid reimbursement.

We are so happy to see this course happen with the support of emeritus faculty Dr. Janet Gray, alum Ria Rodney, and incoming chair of Public Health Natasha Patterson and funding from the Burke Foundation. Huge congratulations to all!
