Animal control officers don’t enjoy writing citations, but enforcement is sometimes necessary to protect public safety and animal welfare.

Citations are typically issued when local ordinances are not followed, such as:

Animals running at large or not properly contained
Failure to maintain current rabies vaccination
Excessive animal accumulation beyond local limits
Neglect of basic care requirements (food, water, shelter)
Failure to license pets where required

The purpose of citations is not punishment, it is compliance and prevention. Most situations can be corrected quickly once an owner is made aware of the issue.

In many cases, officers will first provide education and an opportunity to correct the problem before enforcement action is taken. However, when issues continue or pose a risk to the community or the animal’s welfare, citations help ensure accountability and safety standards are met.

Animal control works to balance education and enforcement with the goal of keeping both animals and communities safe.
