This morning, especially after the tragic incidents recently, we take a moment to think about how our nation has evolved since that horrific morning and day 24 years ago. 2,977 didn’t go home to their families. 343 firefighters, 71 LEO’s, 55 military personnel and 8 paramedics died in service of their country. I always feel like those numbers don’t accurately reflect how absolutely terrible that day was. And then the days that followed. First responders and rescue dogs who continued to sift and search through the debris and rubble, the families who waited on pins and needles hoping their loved ones name didn’t make it on the casualty list and they were alive somewhere, hanging on. The health problems that many survivors endured long after the sun had set that day.

I am a first responder along with my husband. I didn’t set out to be in this career but thanks to my husbnd it still managed to suck me in. We are a family. Today we remember the impact the 9/11 attack had on not just our nation, but our family. Whether you are white, black, brown, or any variation in between, rich, poor, educated, illiterate, healthy, sick, right-wing, left-wing or some other wing IT DOES NOT MATTER. We are Americans. Disagree, agree, debate, whatever you want but do it respectfully and without hate. Not a single responder asked a victim or other responder what their political affiliation was before they decided to help. Not. A. Single. One. So if you don’t do anything else today, atleast do this: set aside your differences for 24 hours and remember how each and every one of us felt that day…banded together and ready to help, to rebuild, to forge ahead AS AMERICANS.

God bless you all. And never forget! 🇺🇸

🚒 PSA: Do Not Park in Fire Lanes 🚒

As a reminder, you should not park in the fire lane unless you are an emergency vehicle! We see it weekly, sometimes daily...yes, Target, Walmart, Aldi's, Meijer, Kroger to name a few. These lanes must remain unobstructed at all times. Parking, idling, leaving a vehicle unattended or waiting in a fire lane, even for a few minutes, can have serious consequences. The seconds it takes us to get a vehicle to move out of a fire lane can cause irreparable harm to a medical patient, loss of a property or worse.

Why It's Important:

🔥Emergency Access: Fire lanes provide essential access for fire trucks, ambulances, and other emergency vehicles. Blocking these lanes can delay response times during critical situations.
🚑Safety First: In an emergency, every second counts. Clear fire lanes ensure that firefighters and paramedics can reach those in need as quickly as possible.
‼️Legal Consequences: Parking in a fire lane is illegal and can result in fines, towing, and other penalties, even if there is not present fire or emergency.

Let's all do our part to keep our community safe. Please be mindful of where you park, especially during the holidays when parking lots are busier than usual. Your cooperation can make a life-saving difference. Thank you for your understanding and support.

When I’m told I need to deliver a death notification, the weight of it hits me immediately. My chest tightens, my stomach sinks, and my heart skips a beat. I know I’m about to share news that will change someone’s life forever.

When I arrive at the home, I knock on the door and take a step back. I often see the family through a window, walking through their living room. They wave or smile at me, trying to greet me warmly. That moment is incredibly hard because I can’t smile back—I know I’m about to bring them the darkest moment of their life.

When they open the door, they usually ask, “What’s wrong? What happened?” That’s when I begin by confirming their name and if I’m at the correct address. Once I know I’ve got the right person, in the right place, I notice something I’ve seen many times before—they start taking small steps back, almost fading away from me. I don’t think they even realize they’re doing it. I think it’s their body trying to create distance from an unwelcome moment, knowing deep down that something devastating is about to be said.

Then, I deliver the most difficult words anyone could ever hear:
“It’s my sad responsibility to tell you that your son has died in a crash.”
“It’s my sad responsibility to tell you that your daughter has died in a crash.”
“It’s my sad responsibility to tell you that your mother has died in a crash.”
“It’s my sad responsibility to tell you that your father has died in a crash.”

In those moments, I often see one of three reactions:
1. They collapse. Some fall to the floor, crying in a way that’s impossible to describe. I kneel beside them, and often, I cry with them.
2. They go silent. Others stand frozen, their faces blank as they try to process what I’ve said. They’re lost, unsure of how to move forward.
3. They push me away. Sometimes, I’m told to leave or forcefully pushed back as they yell, “No! Don’t say that!” But I stay because no one should face that moment alone.

These moments stay with me and the family involved.

Tonight is a night meant for celebration—a time to welcome the new year, look forward to fresh opportunities, and start anew. It shouldn’t begin with tragedy and heartbreak.

Please make safe choices tonight. Don’t drink and drive. Use a designated driver. Protect yourself and your loved ones from the pain of ever having to face this kind of moment.

Be safe,
Trooper Ben

Snow will affect the area today as a fast-moving system tracks through the region. The KC area will see snow amounts up to 2 inches. But further east, higher amounts are likely with up to 5 inches into central MO. A winter weather advisory has been issued for the KC metro eastward into central MO, along the I-70 corridor. Remember to slow down and use caution while driving in snowy conditions. Plan extra time to travel or consider altering travel plans.
