This morning, especially after the tragic incidents recently, we take a moment to think about how our nation has evolved since that horrific morning and day 24 years ago. 2,977 didn’t go home to their families. 343 firefighters, 71 LEO’s, 55 military personnel and 8 paramedics died in service of their country. I always feel like those numbers don’t accurately reflect how absolutely terrible that day was. And then the days that followed. First responders and rescue dogs who continued to sift and search through the debris and rubble, the families who waited on pins and needles hoping their loved ones name didn’t make it on the casualty list and they were alive somewhere, hanging on. The health problems that many survivors endured long after the sun had set that day.
I am a first responder along with my husband. I didn’t set out to be in this career but thanks to my husbnd it still managed to suck me in. We are a family. Today we remember the impact the 9/11 attack had on not just our nation, but our family. Whether you are white, black, brown, or any variation in between, rich, poor, educated, illiterate, healthy, sick, right-wing, left-wing or some other wing IT DOES NOT MATTER. We are Americans. Disagree, agree, debate, whatever you want but do it respectfully and without hate. Not a single responder asked a victim or other responder what their political affiliation was before they decided to help. Not. A. Single. One. So if you don’t do anything else today, atleast do this: set aside your differences for 24 hours and remember how each and every one of us felt that day…banded together and ready to help, to rebuild, to forge ahead AS AMERICANS.
God bless you all. And never forget! 🇺🇸
