♻️ What’s really left in your household blue trash bag these days?

With all of Exeter’s recycling and disposal programs available, you might be surprised how much waste can actually be diverted from the landfill! Every item recycled, composted, or reused helps reduce solid waste and protects our environment. 🌎

Here are just a few programs available through Exeter Public Works:

🟦 Single Stream Recycling
Plastic bottles & containers, glass food containers, aluminum & steel cans, cardboard, paper, and more. Available curbside or at the Transfer Station.

📦 Styrofoam Recycling
Clean #6 foam packaging can be brought to the Transfer Station instead of throwing it away.

👕 Textile Recycling with Helpsy
Clothing, shoes, linens, towels, stuffed animals, backpacks, and more can all be recycled — even if worn or stained! Schedule curbside pickup or use textile bins around town.

🍎 Composting
Food scraps, meat, bones, coffee grounds, and even greasy pizza boxes can be composted in the Mr. Fox bins at the Transfer Station instead of being tossed in the trash.

⚠️ Household Hazardous Waste Day
Oil-based paint, gasoline, pesticides, pool chemicals, household cleaners, and other hazardous materials should never go in regular trash. Exeter hosts an annual Hazardous Waste collection event in October.

The less we throw away — and the less we consume or bring into our homes in the first place — the less waste we send to disposal facilities.
Small changes at home can make a big impact community-wide. 💚

💧🚧 National Public Works Week Spotlight 🚧💧

Behind the scenes every day, Exeter Public Works crews work hard to keep our community running safely and smoothly.

From maintaining roads and drainage systems to responding to emergencies and supporting infrastructure projects, Public Works staff provide essential services residents rely on daily — often without even realizing it.

A major part of that work includes protecting public health through the operation and maintenance of Exeter’s drinking water and wastewater systems. Crews continuously monitor, maintain, and improve the Town’s water infrastructure to ensure safe, reliable drinking water for our community and the proper collection and treatment of wastewater before it is safely returned to the environment.

Whether it’s repairing a water main, responding during storms, maintaining pump stations, or performing routine system maintenance, these dedicated employees work year-round — in all conditions — to keep Exeter moving.

Please join us in thanking the Exeter Public Works team for their continued service and commitment to our community! 👏🇺🇸

🚰WATER MAIN & FIRE HYDRANT FLUSHING

The Exeter Public Works Department maintains approximately 55 miles of water main, over 525 fire hydrants, multiple water storage tanks, pumping stations, and the infrastructure that delivers clean drinking water and fire protection throughout the community. As part of maintaining this critical system, crews conduct routine water main and fire hydrant flushing throughout the year.

Why do we flush the water system?

• 🚒 Emergency Readiness: Hydrants are inspected and exercised to help ensure they are operational and ready for use during emergencies.

• 🔧 Infrastructure Maintenance: Flushing helps crews evaluate valves, hydrants, and water mains while preventing sediment buildup and maintaining reliable system performance.

• 💧 Water Quality: Flushing removes naturally occurring sediment and biofilms that can accumulate in water mains over time. It also helps maintain disinfectant effectiveness and overall water quality throughout the distribution system.

🏞️ Where Exeter’s Drinking Water Comes From:
Exeter’s municipal water system uses a combination of surface water and groundwater sources. The primary supply comes from the Exeter River and Exeter Reservoir, along with groundwater wells including Skinner Springs, Stadium Well, Gilman Well, and the Lary Lane Well.

What residents may notice during flushing operations:

• Some residents may temporarily experience cloudy, yellow, or tea-colored water. This is normal and occurs when harmless sediment becomes stirred up during flushing operations.

• Residents may also experience temporary low water pressure while crews are flushing nearby water mains.

• If discoloration occurs, run cold water from a faucet such as a basement sink or bathtub until the water clears.

• Avoid doing laundry during periods of discolored water to help prevent staining.

📞 If you experience ongoing water issues such as discoloration, odor, low pressure, or no water, contact the Exeter Water Treatment Plant at (603) 773-6169.

This is just one of the many behind-the-scenes efforts Exeter DPW performs every day to maintain safe, reliable public infrastructure for the community.

🌱 Composting Update! 🌱
We’ve collected 7,810 pounds of compost at the Transfer Station so far this year — and counting! 💪♻️

Want to get started? It’s easy with the Mr. Fox compost bins at the Transfer Station. Here are a few quick tips:

✅ Use compostable green bags (made from starchy materials)
✅ Collect food scraps and approved items
✅ Keep a small lidded container (like a coffee can) in your kitchen
✅ Store full compost bags in a 5-gallon bucket with a lid outside
✅ Can’t make it right away? Freeze your compost until drop-off
✅ Bring your compost during regular hours:
• Tuesdays 9:00 AM – 1:00 PM
• Fridays & Saturdays 9:00 AM – 2:30 PM

🍕 Reminder: Please break down pizza boxes to help save space for others!

Let’s keep those scraps out of the landfill and turning into something great! 🌍💚
