I welcomed members of Pennsylvania United's Voice of Westmoreland chapter to my Harrisburg office to discuss issues impacting working families across our region. Voice of Westmoreland member and my constituent, Jocelyn Burns, and I had a conversation covering topics including state budget priorities, economic challenges facing Pennsylvania residents, and current legislation in the General Assembly.

I appreciate this group taking the time to travel to Harrisburg and share their perspectives and advocate for the issues they care about.

Scammers are constantly finding new ways to target individuals, which is why education and awareness are so important.

Thank you to Mary Bach of AARP's Consumer Issues Task Force for joining us at Redstone Highlands Communities for Scam Jam and sharing her knowledge and expertise with attendees. Mary provided valuable information on how to recognize common scams, protect personal information and avoid becoming a victim of fraud.

We are fortunate to have dedicated advocates like Mary serving as a resource. Thank you to everyone who attended and took steps to better protect themselves and their loved ones from scams.

The Department of Conservation and Natural Resources is now accepting applications for the 2026 Wild Resource Conservation Program (WRCP), which offers grants to support research and conservation projects that protect Pennsylvania’s native wildlife, plants and ecosystems.

The program will invest more than $500,000 in projects across the Commonwealth that support conserving non-game animals, native plants and fungi, and invertebrates such as insects — species that are often left out of traditional conservation programs but are vital to the Commonwealth’s ecosystems.

The deadline to apply is June 30. For additional information and a link to apply, visit https://www.pa.gov/agencies/dcnr/conservation/wildlife-biodiversity/wild-resources-conservation-program

Murrysville was spotlighted this past month at PNC Park! Pastor Ed Gray from First Presbyterian Church delivered a beautiful rendition of the national anthem before the game. The following night, 96-year-old Sam Manganello did a fabulous job playing the national anthem and demonstrated true patriotism.

The weekend also included recognition of the Franklin Regional Athletic Association highlighting the dedication of our local student athletes.

I'm so glad I got to see Murrysville represented!

May is Lyme Disease Awareness Month. As you spend time outdoors, it is important to check yourself, loved ones and pets for ticks and be aware of the symptoms of Lyme disease and other tick-related ailments.

The first line of defense against Lyme is to take precautions outdoors by treating clothing and gear with products containing 0.5% permethrin, using insect repellent, and avoiding wooded and brushy areas with high grass or leaf litter. When you return indoors, check your clothing, gear and pets for ticks; shower as soon as possible after being outdoors; and check your body for ticks, particularly in areas such as under the arms, in and around the ears, back of the knees and other similar areas.

If bitten, an individual should monitor the area for the appearance of a bull’s eye rash, though the rash does not develop in all cases. Early symptoms of Lyme disease include fever, fatigue, headache and muscle aches. However, symptoms may progress to arthritic, neurologic and cardiac symptoms if not treated.

Lyme disease is caused by the bacteria Borrelia burgdorferi and is transmitted by the bite of a blacklegged tick or deer tick. If you pull a tick from yourself, a loved one or your pet, you may have it tested to determine if it carries Lyme or other tick-borne diseases.

More information about how to get a tick tested at the East Stroudsburg University Tick Lab is available at https://www.ticklab.org/.

May is Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month. By consistently following safe driving and riding practices and sharing them with others, all motorists can help reduce the number of motorcyclist fatalities on America’s roads.

The following are safe driving and riding practices that all road users – vehicle drivers and motorcyclists alike – should follow to help reduce the number of fatalities and injuries on our roadways:
• Observe all traffic laws and always obey the speed limit.
• Drive and ride alcohol- and drug-free.
• Avoid distractions while driving or riding.
• Drivers should yield to motorcyclists, especially while turning at intersections.
• Motorcyclists should wear high-visibility protective gear.

One other significant step that motorcycle riders can take toward promoting road safety for all motorists is completing a rider education and training course. Please visit www.pamsp.com to learn about Pennsylvania’s free motorcycle training courses.

I'm excited to announce the winners of the Let Freedom Ring 250 Bell Challenge, and the talent on display was truly inspiring. Across the 55th Legislative District, 52 fourth grade classrooms from six school districts and two private schools decorated 3-foot Liberty Bells to honor America’s 250th anniversary to showcase Pennsylvania’s rich history, and share what freedom means to them.

After an impressive first round and final judging by the Westmoreland Museum of American Art, the winners are:
🥇 First Place: Grandview Elementary (Derry Area School District) – Mrs. Sinclar’s class
🥈 Second Place: Amos K. Hutchinson Elementary (Greensburg Salem School District) – Mrs. Funk, Mrs. D. Bates, Mrs. R. Gates, and Mrs. Zahorchak’s classes
🥉 Third Place: Kiski Area South Primary (Kiski Area School District) – Ms. Thompson’s class

The creativity, teamwork, and pride in these projects were incredible. A huge thank-you to all the students and teachers who participated and brought such positive energy to this celebration of America’s 250th birthday!

You can check out the winning bells at my Capitol office throughout June, and again on July 11 at the Westmoreland Museum of American Art during their fun, family-friendly Putt-a-palooza event. Learn more at www.thewestmoreland.org
