A wonderful side project for our Heart of Uwchlan team at Uwchlan’s Rhondda Community. This project used dredged sediment from the pond to make a meadow for our local habitat and stormwater management. Great job and many thanks to Toni Gorkin, Kathy Tracy and our many volunteers!

These folks are dedicated! We appreciate their time, sweat, and back aches expanding and maintaining these garden areas. Please reach out to join this team. And more garden areas to come!

A big thank you to our Heart of Uwchlan Project volunteers! đŸ‘©â€đŸŒŸđŸ‘šâ€đŸŒŸ

Over the last four years, they’ve given almost 1000 hours of service combined.

Their efforts have helped introduce native plants, educate the public, and expand the biodiversity of 3 gardens in Baird ParkđŸŒ±

Fun for all ages on October 29th from 1-3 at the township building. Trick-or-Treat for native plant seed packets at the Uwchlan EAC’s event “Monsters, Masks and Pollinators.” The Heart of Uwchlan team will be handing out seed packets for you to plant native plants in your own garden like the ones in the project’s three pollinator gardens. Also, see information about how to “winter sow” the seeds in plastic jugs for winter treatment so you have seedlings to plant in the spring and so much more!

They surveyed the native plants in the Streamside and Wetland Gardens, gathered seeds and suggestions for spring additions, weeded and mulched. Come visit the gardens and see their handiwork, and contact the Uwchlan EAC if you’d like to join the growing volunteer corps.

The Heart of Uwchlan project was one of several pollinator gardens presented at the West Chester Green Team’s special event on Saturday, August 27, “Chester County Grows – Gardens Inspired by Douglas Tallamy.” The gardens are on Dr. Tallamy’s Homegrown National Park map. Heart of Uwchlan project leader Toni Gorkin spoke about the “Sleep
Creep
Leap” progress of the three gardens in Baird Park over the last three years, noting also the growth of volunteer participation and increasing public interest in pollinator gardens. Uwchlan Board of Supervisors Mayme Baumann and Bill Miller and their spouses, EAC member Jim Warihay and his wife attended the very delightful gala event at the West Chester Historical Society.

Leaving the plant stalks in the Heart of Uwchlan Milkweed Garden for native bees who may have laid eggs or overwintered in hollow stems. They are important pollinators. Don’t cut stalks or remove them until temperatures are consistently in the 50’s and the bees will have emerged. Also, don’t remove or discard the leaves or clean up the ground until then: butterflies, moths, native bees, and other beneficial wildlife is overwintering in them. Support our native pollinators!

West Pikeland Township Presents, "You Bet Your Garden" host Mike McGrath's:
“The Dirty Little Secret of Lawn Care”
Join us via Zoom on February 24, 2022 @ 7pm here: https://us06web.zoom.us/j/89460980827

Lawns should be a valuable planetary resource; they slow the pace of heavy rains and help prevent floods; they pump an almost unimaginable amount of oxygen into the air; they sequester a massive amount of carbon and slow the effects of climate change; and they’re the last place you’re allowed to roll your children around in public.
Lawns become the enemy when unnecessary chemicals turn these huge benefits into an environmental nightmare. Be prepared to take notes when You Bet Your Garden host Mike McGrath reveals ‘the Dirty Little Secret of Lawn Care”.

This program was the seed for the Heart of Uwchlan project to plant pollinator friendly native plant gardens in Uwchlan Township’s Baird Park. It not only teaches about nature, but also about how to become engaged with the public around important natural issues.
Want to learn more about the natural world and support conservation in Northern Chester County? Become a PA Master Naturalist volunteer! A spring course is forming now with Green Valleys Watershed Association. For more information and to apply, visit https://bit.ly/PMNtraining.

First caterpillar appeared today. I guess I need to leave those aphids alone.
Milkweed seeds from last year’s Township’s garden sprouted in the over-winter milk jug. Today they moved to their adolescent period by being separated. Another month and they will become permanent residents in Weavers Pond. Thank you Toni for the tutelage!
