Members of the Fair Lawn Community,

Normally, our members are here to help you. But now, we need YOUR help!

We are less than two weeks away from our event.

Berlando Drake, an 8-year member of the Fair Lawn Fire Department, is battling cancer. As with any serious illness, it adds a financial strain to the family impacted. Fair Lawn Fire Company # 3 will be hosting a wing night fund raiser on Friday June 12. For $50 you will get wings and beverages. Live music will be provided by McKinley & Morlot!

Back story about Berlando. Berlando grew up in the Chicago area and her family and friends are not local. THE FAIR LAWN FIRE DEPARTMENT IS HER FAMILY!

So we do ask that our supporters and brother and sister firefighters consider joining us for our event. If you are unable to attend, we ask that you consider donating to one of Fair Lawn’s Bravest.

If you wish to RSVP or need more information, please text us at (201) 757-2454.
Thanks

On Monday May 25, the members of the Fair Lawn Fire Department gathered in the rain for our annual memorial service. During the service, the members of the department that have passed on are read and we reflect on what they did. A prayer was led by FLFD Chaplin Father Sam Monaco. In addition, we take our annual department photograph. Photos courtesy of FLFD photographer John Argueta.

May 4th is International Firefighters Day. May 4th is the feast day of St. Florian, the patron saint of firefighters. Our department’s strength comes from our members. Over one hundred and ten men and women volunteer their time to protect the Borough of Fair Lawn. The members in these pictures are your friends, your neighbors, their kids play on your kid’s sports teams. They are businesspeople, teachers, retirees. Today the department salutes its members and everything they do for the community. Here are some of the faces of our dedicated volunteers who protect the Borough of Fair Lawn.

Think you have what it takes to be one of Fair Lawn’s Bravest? If so send us a private message or send an email to us at [email protected] and we will talk to you about becoming a member!

Today, we lower our flags at half-staff to honor all our fallen firefighters who have died in the line of duty. Today, 97 firefighters who died in the line of duty in 2025 and 107 firefighters who died in previous years will be honored at the National Fallen Firefighters Memorial in Emmitsburg Maryland.

Fair Lawn honors two of these brave firefighters. Rinze Lowe died in the line of duty on December 29, 1958, while operating at a house fire. Dillon Rinaldo, a former Fair Lawn firefighter, died in the line of duty in 2023 as a member of the Baltimore City Fire Department

Welcome back to another edition of Training Tuesday where we show you what our team working on. It takes a lot of time and training to get a recruit up to speed. Our newest members attend fire school two times a week at the Bergen County Fire Academy but that isn’t even enough. The department holds regular new member drills where our newcomers get additional reps on certain skills. Recently, our new member drill had members stretching hose line into the smoke house. This is a labor intensive activity and requires coordination and communication with your teammates.. In addition, our other new members learned how to swap out SCBA (air tanks) so they can begin to contribute at fire scenes. Training never ends until the day your leave the fire service.

Welcome back to another edition of Training Tuesday. Ladders are something that are regularly used on a fire scene. They provide a way to get into the building and a way for firefighters to leave the building in an emergency. In addition, we use ladders to access roofs of buildings in the event we need to ventilate. Recently, the members of Company 1 and Company 3 did a basic ladder drill to hone their skills on raising, climbing, and lowering ladders. Usually, the truck company is responsible for ladders on a fire scene, but any company or member can find themselves using ladders at any fire. Company 1 Captain Rich Van Handle led the drill and went over the skill sets needed to work safely with ladders.

Today we remember the sacrifice made by Officer Collura.

A day we will never forget. Officer Mary Ann Collura #136 made the ultimate sacrifice, and she is missed every day.

Mary Ann proudly served the Borough of Fair Lawn and all of its residents, especially the kids. It’s hard to believe 23 years have passed, but her legacy will live on forever.

For our new residents and our youth, take a minute to click the link and read about her:

Today and going forward, do something to help your neighbor. Do something kind for someone, or pay it forward—be a Mary Ann.

See everyone outside Borough Hall today at 4:30 PM for a remembrance ceremony.

Fair Lawn, NJ April 14, 2026, A two alarm fire damaged a Fair Lawn residence this afternoon. At 1:33 PM, a passerby called 911 reporting smoke coming from a home on the 38 block of Paterson Street. The Fair Lawn Fire Department was quickly dispatched.

Upon arrival, Fire Chief Michael Salvni reported smoke coming from the residence and requested a second alarm be transmitted. The second alarm brought mutual aid fire crews from Paterson, Saddle Brook, Elmwood Park, and Paramus. These units staffed Fair Lawn fire stations during the fire call.
“The fire was quickly knocked down by the first two arriving engine companies. The damage was isolated to the kitchen area. But there was extensive damage to the kitchen. The residents of the house will be staying with other family members,” said Fair Lawn Fire Chief Michael Salvini.

The fire was placed under control approximately ten minutes after the department’s arrival and all fire units cleared the scene by 2:53 PM. There were no injuries to the residents or to the firefighters.

In addition to the second alarm fire crews, the Fair Lawn Police Department, the Fair Lawn Rescue Squad, and the Fair Lawn Volunteer Ambulance Corp provided assistance on scene.

The fire brought approximately 40 firefighters to the scene. The fire is under investigation by the Fair Lawn Fire Prevention Bureau.

Welcome back to another edition of Training Tuesday. Outdoor training is in full swing at the FLFD. Recently, the members of Company 2 and Company 4 did a fire attack drill. This drill, conducted at our Fire Training Center, had members stretch attack hose into our training building. The hose weights approximately 200 lbs. when it is filled with water and maneuvering it around corners and up stairs can be very challenging not to mention labor intensive. But this is what our members will typically see at a house fire.
