Yesterday we copied a meme from another site that had the word "BAN" related to the current Red Flag Alert issued by the SC Forestry Commission, which was incorrect. Please refer to their press release for details on what this means.

15FEB26 - Brought to you once again by 'Cables Save Lives'. Had three calls for wrecks on I85. One had impacted cables after reported hydroplane loss of traction. There was another incident due to hydroplane and the other was just a disabled vehicle on the shoulder of the roadway. Remember that loss of traction happens easier during a rain after an extended dry spell when rain is 'washing' dust, dirt and especially leaked petroleum products off the roadway.

‼A Hero to School Kids Needs Your Help...‼

Members from the Oconee County Sheriff's Office are holding a BBQ fundraiser to help support Cpl. Jesus De luna Soto, who has been dealing with an on-going medical condition.

Corporal Jesus De Luna Soto, the SRO at Orchard Park Elementary, has had quite the rough year. At the beginning of the year, he suffered a severe back injury which required corrective surgery. This surgery forced Jesus to be out of work for an extensive time while recovering. While at home, still recovering from the surgery, his newborn daughter experienced a medical event during which she appeared to stop breathing. Jesus and his wife performed CPR on their child in their front yard while waiting for responders. During the course of his CPR efforts, Jesus reinjured the area of his back where he had just had corrective surgery, further extending his absence from work. Jesus’ daughter, after this event, was diagnosed with epilepsy. When she experiences seizures from her epilepsy, she sometimes has tonic-clonic seizures, which result in her appearing to stop breathing. Because of this diagnosis, Jesus and his wife do not feel comfortable allowing their daughter to go unmonitored, so they have been sleeping in shifts. This fear, which certainly is instilled in someone after having to perform CPR on their own child, coupled with Jesus’ physical limitations, has presented this family with a complicated situation.

The bills don’t stop coming, even in a crisis. Unfortunately, the county has exhausted all of its options regarding his leave. Jesus has served as a law enforcement officer for 9.5 years.

Fire can quickly get out of hand and with the low humidity and high winds will move way faster than expected. See linked alert from SC Forestry Commission issued today.

03/01/2025

The South Carolina Forestry Commission is issuing a statewide Red Flag Fire Alert, effective immediately until further notice.

The alert is being issued to discourage people from burning outdoors when weather conditions present an elevated risk of wildfire. In addition to dry fuels resulting from the lack of significant rain, forecasts are calling for very low relative humidity values – below 30% – and gusty winds across much of the state through the weekend.

A Red Flag Fire Alert does not prohibit outdoor burning, provided that all other state and local regulations are followed, but the Forestry Commission uses the alert to strongly encourage citizens to voluntarily postpone any such burning until the alert is lifted. Land managers who are considering conducting prescribed fires should take extra care if they choose to burn under a Red Flag.

“The dangerous conditions we’re going to see over the next few days make a good portion of the state vulnerable to fires that can spread rapidly and be difficult to control,” said SCFC Fire Chief Darryl Jones. “These kinds of spring weather patterns are what make this time of year the traditional peak of our wildfire season.”

SCFC firefighters responded to 183 wildfires in January alone, nearly double its five-year average for the first month of the year. The agency has already recorded more than 300 wildfires in February. Historically, wildfire occurrence in South Carolina is greater in March than in any other month.

While small, scattered areas of the state have received minimal rainfall this week, fuels are still very dry in critical areas. Low relative humidity and high wind speeds add greatly to the risk factors for wildfire ignition.

Although a Red Flag Fire Alert does not ban outdoor burning, it does trigger certain county or local ordinances that restrict outdoor fires, so residents should contact their local fire departments to check whether such restrictions apply in their areas. The alert will remain in effect until lifted by the Commission, whose fire managers will continuously monitor the situation.
