The Howling Dog Saloon

The Howling Dog Saloon 1970’s Alaska pipeline era saloon The Howling Dog Saloon is a seasonal roadhouse-style pub featuring live music on stage.

Our beer garden has shaded picnic tables, horseshoes, and perhaps the only regulation sand volleyball court in Alaska. The Howling Dog Saloon first opened its doors in Ester in the late 1960's, when drinking age in Alaska was 19 and it was regarded as a "must go" by the University of Alaska Fairbanks community. After 1971, the Howling Dog moved to Fox, where it occupied the old Fox Store and expan

ded to become The Howling Dog Saloon. Through the 1970's & 80's the Dog gained popularity with a broad array of patrons as the Trans-Alaska Pipeline opened a new economy to Fairbanks and the "Haul Road" became accessible for public travel. We're located near that intersection of the Steese, old Steese and Elliott Highways, about 11 miles north of downtown Fairbanks and 500 miles south of Deadhorse/Prudhoe Bay. As the world's farthest north rock & blues nightclub, the Dog presents great live music by Alaskan and nationally-recognized talent. We also host events, car & motorcycle club meetings, fundraisers for charitable causes, reunions, receptions, and theme parties.

In case you’re curious; Derral Gleason Music will continue to play gigs around the state thru the end of Alaska’s summer season. Cheers!

Derral Gleason is performing in the Swing bar tomorrow night!

So, who is this Derral guy?
A native of Houston, TX, Derral is a dynamic and diverse performer, with a musical history of touring nationally and internationally. His bands have toured with the Police, INXS, Iggy Pop and the Divinyls. As a solo artist, Derral has opened for other artists, including Jerry Jeff Walker, Reverend Horton Heat and Paul Kelly.

His musical career began with the exciting New Wave band, Billy Clone and the Same, based out of Phoenix, AZ. Derral went on to lead the edgy Blitz Girls while in Boulder, CO - touring the US, Australia and New Zealand.

His next musical endeavor was the Illustrious Illustrated Men, also based out of Colorado, before moving back to Texas - this time to Austin, where his music has found its most recent and long-standing incarnation as the DG3 (Derral Gleason Trio).

While writing and performing music are at the core of his being, Derral also has a love of the outdoors - fishing, hiking, and exploring are at the top of that list. He's a sci-fi aficianado, and enjoys playing and watching baseball (and football, if truth be told!).

This is what happens when you let your owner stray from his bar… Malemute Saloon owner Scott Swingle was found last night in Fox, on drums!

UPDATE: the day after! Thanks everyone who came out, stopped in, brought cold beverages & yummy nibbles, dancing shoes, and playful attitudes.

Thank you musicians, in order of appearance: Michael Stackhouse, Rattles, Paul Knight, Derral Gleason, Jason “Ely” Nunnenkamp, Scott Swingle, April Moore, and Diamond Fuller.

Come on out to the Dog on Sunday evening - we're gonna sing, dance, and generally have a grand old time! Ralph says he reckons you can bring your own brews and whatever you want to throw on the grill outside, then come on inside for some rockin' good fun. See you there!
