Back to school season is here, and those adorable first day of school signs are everywhere! We love celebrating these milestones but we also want to remind everyone to think twice before sharing them online.

Many of these signs include personal details like your child’s full name, age, teacher, school, grade, height, favorite things, and more. While most people online have good intentions, not everyone does. That information can be used by someone with harmful intentions.

Before you hit “post,” take a moment to cover or remove any identifying information. Better yet, snap a photo that simply celebrates the moment without revealing personal details.

A few simple changes can go a long way in protecting your child. Safe is always better. 💙

Facilities Services connected with a wildlife biologist from the Alaska Department of Fish and Game. They anticipate that the chicks are close to or actively fledging, and that defensive behavior will likely increase and spread to a broader area over the coming weeks. Based on this guidance, the trails will remain closed for the time being. We will reassess the situation in mid-August. Thank you for your patience and understanding.

We are thrilled to congratulate Investigator Dan Bennett on his well deserved retirement. Dan was first hired by University of Alaska Fairbanks Police Department, then served with the Yakutat and The Nome Police Departments. After making his mark across rural Alaska, he was selected to be Chief of Galena Police in 2003.

Finally, in January of 2007, Dan Bennett came to work for Wasilla Police. During his time here he has been promoted to Investigator, worked as the Reserve Officer Program coordinator, became the first school resource officer for Houston High School, and helped Wasilla PD win an impressive number of athletic championships over the years.

At his retirement ceremony today, one of the themes that wove in and out of every story told was that Dan always gives 100%. We feel that it's a very good snapshot of how he does everything. Whether he is bringing justice to victims or coaching a local basketball team; Dan gives 100%.

We're going to miss him around the squad room but we are so thankful for his outstanding and dedicated service to the citizens of Wasilla and citizens all across Alaska.

7/20/26 - Case 26-2167 – Fatal MVC Collision Update

The motorcyclist who died as a result of the July 19, 2026, motor vehicle collision has been identified as 19-year-old Aiden Cowles.

Based on evidence collected at the scene and witness statements, investigators determined that Cowles was wearing protective gear, including a helmet, was traveling southbound on the Steese Highway, and had a green traffic signal when a bicyclist entered the intersection eastbound from 10th Avenue against the traffic signal. The motorcycle struck the bicycle and subsequently lost control.

The bicyclist got up after the collision and left the scene on foot before FPD officers could contact him, and we are seeking information on identifying him. He is described as an Alaska Native male in his 30s, approximately 5 feet 10 inches tall, weighing about 230 pounds, with short hair and a darker complexion.

"This is a heartbreaking and preventable tragedy," said Fairbanks Police Chief Ron Dupee. "Aiden was just 19 years old and had his entire life ahead of him. Our thoughts are with his family and loved ones as they grieve this unimaginable loss."

The Fairbanks Police Department is continuing to actively investigate this incident and is asking anyone with information to come forward. If you have information that may assist investigators, please email [email protected] or call the Fairbanks Police Department at 907-450-6500.
