Northern Alaska Scenarios Project- NASP

Northern Alaska Scenarios Project- NASP This project provides space for the communities of Alaska's Arctic Boroughs to focus on their needs

The objectives of the Northern Alaska Scenarios Project include facilitating this kind of communication and conversation through social media. Let’s talk about what you would like your community to be in 2040, what would make you want to keep coming back to and keep living in Arctic Alaska? Instead of passively adapting to whatever comes, scenarios can help you actively and creatively shape what y

our home and region will be in the future. What are scenarios?
• A scenario exercise is not planning or decision-making. It is a process of asking “what if?” that enables the participants to help their communities manage risks for the future.
• The Barrow scenarios workshop (17-20 February 2015) is based on community expert deliberation. The goal is to think in new ways about possible futures of the two Arctic Boroughs from many different standpoints.
• These scenarios will enable community members to work together to manage risks to health and sustainability
(1) bringing people together to diagnose and tackle present problems so no one group is “doing it alone,
(2) by discussing and anticipating future needs as things change,
(3) creatively talking about shaping the future so that the NWA and NS Borough residents can design the processes they want to create a future they want. In short, the NASP provides the two boroughs with a process to determine and prioritize those variables most important to monitor for desired change and to assist with information and strategies to observe and track these variables for successful healthy communities that are sustainable to 2040 and beyond.

Sweden’s northernmost city is falling into the mine it grew up around – so it is being redesigned and rebuilt 3km away. But how do citizens feel about the massive transformation of their home town?

Hi Everyone and in particular our workshop participants. I'm sending out an email today letting everyone know where we are and asking a few further questions about the next 6 months. Thank you all for helping us to have such a great workshop in Kotzebue! Here's the article that shows that there can be good communication and sharing that goes both ways between science of the university style and the lifeways and deep knowledge of Indigenous people. Let's keep moving forward to ensure this "merge" is respectful and useful and, as appropriate, available to all those who want and need to access it.

FAIRBANKS — My mother had so much to tell us about the taiga forest that she took my brothers and me into the woods during the summer when we were children. “Chew this,” she’d say, handing us hard chunks of spruce sap. “It’s gum.” Or “Don’t pick all the flowers,” she’d say. “Don’t pick all the berri…

Mention of the NASP and NSSI research projects at the end of the article, as coastal erosion is certainly to be an important factor for healthy sustainable communities towards 2040. Looking forward to seeing all the participants in Kotz next week. We hope Qatnut festival was a success, and wish we could have been there. We are busy getting prepared for Workshop 2.

A new, comprehensive report tracks loss of northern Alaska coastline since the late 1940s. The erosion, packed into a few months a year, is some of the most dramatic in the nation, researchers say.
