This little guy was found on the tipping floor at the I-66 Transfer Station. After making a run for it, he was later found hiding in one of the tunnel rooms and was picked up by Fairfax County Animal Services. 🐾

Thank you to Fairfax County Animal Services for coming to the rescue!

A good reminder for ALL visitors, collectors, residents and four-legged friends, to follow the safety rules when visiting our disposal sites. We want everyone to leave with all their fingers, toes and tails intact! 🐱🐾

What is wrong with this picture?

There are two dumpsters side by side: one is for recycling and one is for trash. The recycling dumpster contains a toilet and a clear plastic bag.

The toilet should be taken to one of our disposal sites as construction debris and the plastic bag should go in the trash—even if the contents of the bag are recyclable.

Visit our website to learn what we take at our disposal sites https://www.fairfaxcounty.gov/publicworks/recycling-trash/residential-materials

This week's waste word is greenwashing, a misleading form of marketing to promote products as more “environmentally friendly” than they really are.

Usually characterized by vague claims, visuals that use green colors, and fake labels.

Remember to read the fine print on all packaging to make sure what you are buying lives up to what it promises!

Kinda chic to treat wastewater. 💧

Every day, our Wastewater team works behind the scenes to safely treat wastewater, protect public health and help keep our waterways clean.

Turns out, good infrastructure never goes out of style. ✨

Are you sure you want to toss that?

Other than some slight wear and tear, this baby activity saucer looks as good as new. So why is it on our trash tipping floor?

Reports show that baby related expenses can cost parents more than $20,000 in the first year alone. Before throwing out baby items, try giving them away through online swap groups like Buy Nothing.

You can also save money and the environment by buying used. Hand-me-downs all around!

Thinking about greening up your lawn before fall? Hold off on the heavy chemicals. Excess fertilizer washes off lawns during summer downpours and fuels rapid algae growth in our ponds and rivers. This uses up all the oxygen in the water, hurting fish and other aquatic life like frogs.

Consider a soil test first to see what your yard needs and never apply chemicals right before a rainstorm. Let’s keep our ecosystem balanced.
