Our food drive starts today and runs through October 3.

Everything collected goes to the food pantries at Oakton, Woodson, and Falls Church high schools.

If you’re grabbing groceries this week, the pantries have told us what they need most: cereal, granola bars, pasta and tomato sauce, canned tuna and chicken, rice, cooking oil, shelf-stable milk, juice boxes, snacks for lunchboxes. Full list is on the flyer.

New wayfinding ‘obelisks’ are up in Tysons.

The Board of Supervisors approved these markers back in March. At each of the four Metro stations in Tysons, they do something simple: tell you where you are, point you toward streets, trails, and landmarks nearby, and tell you how long it takes to walk there.

They’re part of a larger wayfinding effort the Tysons Community Alliance has been building out. It started as a pilot and those signs worked. So now they’re going where the most people arrive on foot.

The reason this matters more than a sign usually does: Tysons was originally designed for people driving through it. It’s now a place where close to 30,000 people live. Folks here grocery shop on foot, walk to a park with their kids, or are looking for some good eats after leaving the office. Someone walking needs different things than someone behind the wheel, and one of those things is simply knowing which way to go.

Thank you to Tysons Community Alliance, Washington Metro • WMATA, FCDOT, and many others who had a hand in making these a reality!

VHC Health’s new emergency and urgent care center is going up — the first of its kind in Virginia. One building, open 24/7, where a doctor sees you first and determines whether you need the ER or urgent care. No guessing, no ER bill for something urgent care could handle.

About 19,500 people a year will be able to walk in, most of them living a few miles from this corner.

The intersection is getting real safety work too: a pedestrian refuge at the crossing, new crosswalks, and shared-use paths replacing the old service road.

So excited for this new facility to open next year in the Providence District!

A great way to spend a Thursday evening. The Seldom Scene at Nottoway Park, part of the Fairfax County Parks Summer Entertainment Series.

Had the chance to walk the lawn and say hello to many of you before the music started.

One concert left this season — next Thursday. These shows are free, and if you’ve never been to one, this is your sign.

Trees are infrastructure. 🌳

Fairfax County’s tree canopy covers about 55% of our land area. Our goal under CECAP: 60% by 2030 — with every census tract at 40% or more.

That’s not just an environmental target. It’s also related to walkability and public health.

🌡️ Shade cuts surface temperatures on pavement dramatically — the difference between a walkable block and one nobody uses in the summer heat

☀️ Canopy along sidewalks, bus stops, and playgrounds means less sun exposure where people actually spend time outside

💧 Our trees intercept an estimated 7.3 billion gallons of rainfall a year, keeping 945 million gallons of runoff out of our streams and saving $8.4 million in stormwater costs

Right now, 65.7% of our census tracts meet the 40% canopy goal. Which means a third don’t.

Nothing beats a summer evening with neighbors.

I had a great time at National Night Out — the block parties, the ice cream, and most of all the conversations. A special thanks to our police officers, firefighters, and EMS crews who spent the evening answering questions and building community.

The whole County is on display Tysons Corner Center! This collaborative project between Visit Fairfax (Virginia), Northern Virginia LEGO User Group, and Fairfax 250 brings historic landmarks from each of the 9 magisterial districts—in Lego form—to the Tysons Corner mall.
