On Saturday, May 30, the Fairfax Fire Department hosted a live-fire training burn. Members of our department, along with several of our mutual aid partners, had the opportunity to participate in valuable hands-on training, including roof ventilation operations and multiple live-fire training evolutions.
Training opportunities like this are difficult to come by, and we are incredibly grateful to the homeowner for generously allowing us to use the property. Over the past year, firefighters conducted numerous training exercises at this house, building skills and preparing for the final live-fire burn.
These realistic training scenarios help firefighters gain experience in a controlled environment, strengthening the skills needed to respond safely and effectively when real emergencies occur.
We would like to thank everyone who participated, assisted with planning, and helped make this training a success. We also extend our appreciation to our mutual aid partners for their continued support and commitment to training together. Working and training side by side ensures we are ready when our communities need us most.
Thank you to the homeowner for providing this unique opportunity and to all the firefighters who dedicated their time to making this training possible.

Yesterday we said goodbye to our pumper/tanker as it was delivered to its new home at the Hazleton Fire Department. This is the second truck Hazelton has purchased from our department.
This truck served our department and our communities well for many years, and we’re glad to see it continue its service with another department. We hope it serves the Hazleton Fire Department and their community as well as it served ours.

Last night at our monthly business meeting, we had the privilege of welcoming four probationary members into full membership.
We are proud to recognize Firefighters Ty Costigan, Megan Kohoutek, Zach Sankot, and Adam Stallman on this important milestone in their service. Presenting their shields was Lt. Hagen, marking the official transition into full membership.
Please join us in congratulating these dedicated firefighters on their hard work, commitment, and achievement. We look forward to their continued service to our department and community.

🚩 Red Flag Warning 🚩

When a Red Flag Warning is issued by the National Weather Service, it means critical fire weather conditions are either occurring now or will shortly.

🔥 What does that mean?
• Strong winds
• Low humidity
• Dry vegetation

These conditions allow fires to start easily and spread rapidly — often faster than crews can safely contain them.

🚫 Do NOT burn during a Red Flag Warning.
This includes:
• Brush piles
• Yard debris
• Campfires
• Burn barrels

Even small, controlled burns can quickly become out-of-control wildfires under these conditions.

⚠️ Burning during a Red Flag Warning not only puts your property at risk, but also your neighbors, first responders, and our entire community.

Please:
✔ Check weather conditions before burning
✔ Follow all local burn regulations
✔ Postpone any outdoor burning until conditions improve

If you see smoke or fire, call 911 immediately.

Help us keep our community safe. One spark is all it takes.

Tonight, our members participated in a controlled burn alongside our mutual aid partners from the Jefferson Monroe Fire Department off Linn-Johnson Rd.
We truly value the opportunity to assist our neighboring departments with their training burns, just as they support us with ours. Trainings like this provide a great chance to work side by side, learn more about each department’s operations, and strengthen our coordination on the fireground.
Opportunities like these help us operate more seamlessly together while building strong relationships between our members and our departments as a whole.
Thank you again for having us join and assist!

Last night, crews responded to a working structure fire at 400 E Southview Rd. The fire was contained to the garage, with smoke damage reported inside the home. Firefighters were able to quickly bring the situation under control and prevent further spread.
There were no injuries reported.

We would like to thank Atkins Fire & First Responders, Cedar Rapids Fire Department, Area Ambulance Service, and Linn County Sheriff’s Department for their assistance.

An electric golf cart sparked a garage fire Friday night in the 400 block of East Southview Road, according to the Linn County Sheriff’s Office.

We’re officially in our new space!

Our addition is now in use and already making a difference. While we’re still tidying up a few things, we’re incredibly grateful for the room to grow and the possibilities ahead.
