Kurdistan Aid – KAID – Rebuilding Life

For Immediate Release:
Shaswar Abdwlwahid and Others Abducted; Attacks on Protestors and Media in the Kurdistan Region N. Iraq

We are reaching out to you on behalf of Shaswar Abdulwahid's family and friends. On Tuesday, December 19, 2017, in Iraqi Kurdistan, Mr. Abdulwahid, the President of New Generation Movement (Neway Nwe) and former CEO of Nalia Media Institution, was kidnapped by security forces at Sulaimaniyah Airport.

Furthermore, other journalists, politicians, and activists have similarly been arrested by the security forces on Wednesday, December 20, 2017, including Sarkawt Shmsuddin. Mr. Shmsuddin is the Washington correspondent for NRT English and a prominent journalist in the KRG. Additionally, Parliamentarian Raboon Ma'roof was arrested on December 19.

We are extremely concerned for their safety and wellbeing. Since their arrest, there has been no contact with them and their whereabouts are unknown.

Meanwhile, attacks against peaceful demonstrations are occurring throughout the Kurdistan Region, killing several protestors, and leaving many more injured. Protesters who gathered to oppose government corruption were met with violence from state authorities, rather than with dialogue. There is no sign that this unwarranted and brutal crackdown will end without pressure from people and organizations committed to justice and democracy.

In addition, NRT TV was attacked by security forces. The security forces suspended its broadcast and arrested numerous staff. This is a clear and blatant violation of basic human rights and freedom of the press.

We are appealing to you to use your leverage on the Kurdish Authority to (1) end the violence against peaceful demonstrators, (2) ensure a free, unfettered media, and (3) ensure the immediate release of Mr. Abdulwahid and all others who have been unjustly arrested.

Released December 20, 2017, by Kurdistan Aid (KAID)

Earthquake Relief in Kurdistan – Kurdistan Aid

On Sunday, November 12, 2017, a 7.3 magnitude earthquake hit Kermashah and Halabja provinces and surrounding areas in Kurdistan.

More than 1900 villages in Rojhelat (Iranian Kurdistan) were affected, with hospitals destroyed and rescue efforts by Iranian authorities slow. People say they are in need of food and blankets to face the cold. Serpélı Zehaw (Sarpol), in the state of Kermashah, is the most devastated area of all. The destruction was also severe in Bashur (Iraqi Kurdistan), where relief efforts by the Iraqi government have been similarly insufficient. The epicenter of the earthquake was 32 - 50 kilometres from Halabja, Darbandikhan and Kalar. Halabja has suffered much in the past and now must endure this natural disaster.

In all, over 450 people were killed, 7,000 injured, and 70,000 left homeless.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the friends and family of those who perished and we pray for the recovery of all who were injured.

Earthquake Relief in Kurdistan – Kurdistan Aid

The beloved land of Kurdistan is once again grief-stricken, with heartbroken mothers, devastated fathers and orphaned children. When the bombs take a break, Mother Nature is there to fill the void.

According to latest reports, at least 450 people have died and more than 7000 are injured in East and South Kurdistan (Kirmanshah and Halabja) after Sunday night’s earthquake.
Our heartfelt condolences go out to the families who have lost their loved ones and to all the people of Kurdistan.

Look outside in winter, and chances are you will be thankful for your warm, heated home. In Kurdistan, however, many families do not have that luxury- and so they need our help to survive the harsh weather.

At KAID, we are undertaking a campaign to provide a source of warmth for 100 families, by providing one barrel of kerosene per family for home heating use.

$100.00 buys one 220-liter barrel-- and with this donation, you can adopt a family in need and help them keep warm this winter. Any amount you can give WILL make a difference.
