Marin County Safe Routes to School

Marin County Safe Routes to School The mission of Safe Routes to Schools is to increase the number of children walking and biking to school.

Marin County pioneered the national Safe Routes to Schools (SR2S) program. SR2S educates children about pedestrian and bicycle safety and benefits. SR2S progams work with jurisdictions to provide safe routes for children to walk and bicycle to and from school.

Last week we wrapped up the 2025 - 2026 school year with Safe Routes to Schools Marin. It was an absolute pleasure teaching kids to bike at elementary and middle schools across Marin County. Our last rodeo of the year was at Loma Verde Elementary School. Have an amazing summer and we are so excited to be back in the fall. See you on the trails!

Today at Pleasant Valley Elementary School so many kids biked to school. It was awesome to see the school’s bike racks full of bikes. There was a list of blacktop expectations: stay safe, own your actions, always care, and respect everyone and everything. We took advantage of their large blacktop to run through our different bike handling drills. The learn to riders were great at practicing on the hill.

In the news about e-bike legislation.

The best news just came out of Sacramento for Bike to Wherever Day! 🚲 🎉

Two bills that would have severely harmed California’s e-bike industry — AB 1942 and AB 1557 — have officially died in Appropriations.

At the same time, legislation that will finally help regulate dangerous e-motos (SB 1167) is moving forward!

This was a huge win powered by bike coalitions, retailers, families, advocates and riders across California who spoke up and stayed engaged.

Sometimes advocacy works and the good people succeed! ❤️

Today at Old Mill Elementary School, students practiced maneuvers on various courses chalked out to test their skills and knowledge for following the rules of the road. And, our first group of “learn to ride” students even “graduated” and were able to join a course of their choosing.

Friday was a beautiful day in Lagunitas. The yellow, red, and blue striped wall with the school name in black looked incredible. We set up our courses, lane drills, rules of the road, and obstacles and taught kids to ride. Safe Routes to Schools involves almost 60 schools and it was really fun teaching a rodeo near Samuel P. Taylor State Park. The Cross Marin Trail is a 5.3 mile flat and family-friendly multi-use path in the park. It is a great place to bike and learn to ride.
