To serve as a resource for troubled marriages and women married less than 10 years. POPW Inc. [Power of Praying Wives, Inc.] was started in 1999. It is a non-profit organization started by several
young black married women in the local Washington D.C. area community that minister to the needs of newly married women, despite economic status, social background, race, class, or church affliliation.
POPW believes in marriage, and our focus is on the person with the largest sphere of influence in the home, the wife. We promote healthy families and healthy marriages by offering support to newly married women and serve as a resource to troubled marriages by offering friendship, confidentiality, workshops, seminars, conferences and referral counseling. Our organization was started, in part, due to our love for the book by Speaker/Author Stormie Omartian, entitled, 'The Power of a Praying Wife.'
What started as an e-mail ministry has now grown to hundreds of wives across the country, and over seas. Each Thursday, we unite by fasting and praying for our marriages and our husbands. We meet face to face twice a year to encourage and have fellowship with one another. Many young wives are doing this 'marriage thing' on their own, and failing miserably! We were never meant to do marriage 'alone!'
We aim to PREVENT DIVORCE by supporting and educating newly married women and marriages in crisis. OUR FOCUS;
Our focus is on black marriages [the black community has the lowest marriage rate, with over 70% of our black children being born to single moms], but we welcome wives of all races! For our bi-weekly online devotionals, we use wisdom from the Bible, Stormie Omartian's 'THE POWER OF A PRAYING WIFE' book, materials by Dr. James Dobson and Focus on the Family, Dennis & Barbara Rainey and 'Family Life' ministireis, Gary Chapman, Dr.Tony Evans and more. Marriage was God's design, and His way works!
