Birth parents will always be significant in a child’s life 🌼

While the relationship may change or develop over time, adoptive parents are responsible for honoring their child’s birth family.

All relationships take mutual respect, trust, and consistent investment. Connections between birth and adoptive families are no different.

Let’s be relational, not transactional 🫱🏾‍🫲🏿

👉 Every family’s journey is unique but it’s helpful to be aware of these general phases that families experience from placement to finalization.

👉 The most important reason for this is so that they and their support team can recognize when they are in a particular phase so that they can navigate through it.

👉 The biggest risk to disruption is the adoptive family’s unmet expectations - most often families make it through the honeymoon phase to ambivalence and the reality sets in that adoption is going to be much harder than they imagined

👉 Our role as an agency to is have honest conversations about the difficulty of the phases of placement, address unrealistic expectations, assess their readiness to care for a child, and provide pre-service training that equips families.

We cannot heal what we don’t acknowledge 💗 every adoption begins with loss

Loss for a birth mother placing their child, losses for adoptive parents that led them to adopt, + loss for a child being separated from their parents. We don’t shy away from this reality because healing is found where trauma is named.

Love and loss can coexist. Grief and gratitude can share the same space.

Openess in adoption doesn’t look one way. We talk about openness as a spectrum. A life-long relationship that will ebb and flow based on each persons needs, grief, and stage of life as all relationships do.

But the research and lived experience of so many is clear—the benefits of open adoptions are significant.

Here are 8 reasons WHY open adoptions are beneficial 💗
