Today during the City Council retreat, there was discussion of downtown planning and appearance improvements. The Council decided to discuss future planning and actions in the Old Town/downtown area until a work session in July. Several positive comments were made about the recent appearance improvements referencing the landscaping and the recently approved EDA grant for facade improvements. Affirmative comments were also made about the proposed Main Street improvement plan however there is a desire to expand the scope of work to be inclusive of the entire Old Town/downtown area.

These photos were taken of the new planters on Main Street between University Drive and Chain Bridge. We were missing some plant material (boxwoods in the medium planters, Crepe myrtles in the big planters, variegated ivy in all) but that will be put in the next week or so. Still it's a great start! Thanks to all who helped today and gave so much positive feedback.

Wednesday the new pots for Main Street will be delivered and planted with guidance of Rick Dickson and Kirk Holley and the expertise of Fairfax's own Public works staff. Volunteers welcome. Check in with Rick or Kirk to volunteer.

Projects in process now:

May 2017 – Install approximately 40 new landscape planters on one block of Main Street between University Drive and Chain Bridge Road. Place evergreen, perennial and annual plants in planters for seasonal color and permanent interest.

June 2017 – Replace existing asphalt patches in sidewalks along Main Street with brick construction to match existing

June 2017 – Coordinate with some business owners to provide simple landscape improvements on private property along Main Street

Summer 2017 – Paint some existing private commercial buildings on Main Street in coordination with Economic Development Authority façade improvement grants

Summer 2017 – Public outreach to develop Old Town Improvement Plan as part of Comprehensive Plan revisions. This Plan will graphically illustrate specific improvements for street furniture, lighting, signage, landscaping and pedestrian access.

Accomplishments to Date:
Landscaped improvements at corner of East and Main Streets to plant five street trees and related landscaping on public and private property through negotiated agreements.

Installed seasonal lighting. Received donation for some of the work.
Installed new curb and gutter work along Main Street

Relocated approximately 30 existing landscape planters along two blocks of Main Street to ‘fill in’ missing planters and add seasonal color

Identified a need for an Old Town Masterplan to provide direction for future projects and establish standards for street furniture, landscaping and sidewalk widening. The development of the masterplan was linked to the current effort to update the City Comprehensive Plan.

Beginnings
An informal group of stakeholders, including business owners and City staff, began meeting to develop a way of simple ideas and using modest resources to improve Old Town. The basic premise is that an attractive downtown area will encourage more pedestrian activity which will add vitality to the area.
The city provided funding for the projects and the team developed the projects to fit the available funds.
