Fairfax City Economic Development Fairfax City Economic Development (FCED) supports economic and commercial growth in the Fairfax City, VA.

FCED works to attract, retain, and expand successful businesses. The Fairfax City EDA fosters economic development to promote strong commercial revenue, sustainable jobs, and resources for residents by attracting, expanding, retaining, and supporting small business professionals, retailers, and hospitality. The EDA is an organization that promotes a vibrant, growing business environment for city r

esidents. In addition, this supportive environment will assist businesses to start and grow in the city, which creates a strong and sustainable community. A core component of the EDA’s responsibilities involves attracting quality businesses to the City by making it easier to relocate and establish businesses within the city. The EDA is comprised of seven commissioners, independently appointed by the City Council for four year terms. Though a separate unit of government, the EDA works closely with Fairfax City Hall through the Director of Economic Development. The EDA believes in:

-empowering local businesses
-creating sustainable business growth
-promoting community involvement through economic development
-promoting honesty and integrity in the community
-fostering close ties between people, business and government
-the EDA supports new, existing, and prospective Fairfax City small business owners in professional services and retail.

The student-run organization partners with local businesses, nonprofits, and organizations throughout Northern Virginia to address real business challenges through research, analysis, and creative problem-solving while providing students with hands-on consulting experience. 📈

FCED, the Public Works Department, Office of Procurement Services, and Virginia Department of Transportation will host Transportation Engineering Industry Day on June 16 from 9:00 AM to 12:30 PM at 10300 Eaton Place, first floor conference room.

The event will bring together transportation engineering consultants, construction firms, and public sector partners to discuss upcoming opportunities, procurement best practices, industry collaboration, and innovative approaches to infrastructure delivery.

As part of the program, FCED is seeking five presenters to deliver five-minute Innovation Pitch Showcase presentations highlighting emerging tools, technologies, and ideas that could enhance transportation projects and city services. Presentation applications are due June 8.

FCED and the Naval Surface Warfare Center, Carderock Division (NSWCCD), part of the Naval Sea Systems Command, will co-host a reverse pitch day focused on sensors and autonomy on June 26 from 8:30 AM to 1:00 PM at the Stacy C. Sherwood Community Center.

The event will bring together academic, government, and industry partners to explore innovations in smart sensors, robotics, data analysis, and autonomous systems. This collaboration builds on the Partnership Intermediary Agreement established between NSWCCD and FCED through the Capital Tech Bridge initiative, which supports technology transfer, workforce development, and regional innovation partnerships.

Together, the organizations aim to strengthen connections between federal research, local businesses, and educational institutions while supporting economic growth across the region.

George Mason University IT Capstone team, “Patriot Tech Solutions,” from GMU's Dept. of Information Sciences and Technology recently presented the results of their project at the May EDA Meeting.

The project focused on improving the FCED’s operational efficiency across business intelligence tracking, company monitoring, zoning inquiries, and public request management through AI and automation-supported workflows. Using Microsoft Power Automate, AI-assisted data collection, and SharePoint systems, the team demonstrated recurring business intelligence digests, automated company monitoring tools, and dynamic inquiry tracking systems designed to reduce manual effort and streamline internal processes. 🤖

The presentation highlighted the IT Capstone Program, where students apply technical and project management skills to real-world civic innovation challenges in partnership with local governments. Partnering with the Department of Information Sciences and Tech allows us to explore emerging technologies that drive efficiencies and support smarter local government operations.
