"Here is my favorite quote and it resonates with me so much given that I have been challenged on my way to becoming who I am today. What has driven me and got me through those challenging times has been passion and hunger for what I wanted to do. This quote reminds me anytime that the road to success is not easy and it reminds me of my father who believed so much in education and hard work. This quote is from the famous Coach Mike Krzyzewski, of the Duke Basketball team." - CalUMS-VA Prof. George Edeh

I often tell my students “16 x 7 x 2”. Practice something for 16 hours a day, 7 days a week, over 2 months and you will be good at it. Good enough to find a job and work in the field. Want to be a developer, a DBA, a network admin? - above is the recipe. This actually is based roughly on my favorite book by Malcolm Gladwell - the Outliers. Below is one of the book’s main promises, which is also a direct quote:
Don't miss out on this opportunity!
Want a $50 Chick-Fil-A gift card? Or a ticket to the Washington Capitals game? How about paid Amazon Prime membership fee for a year?
Our students, alumni, faculty, and staff are always doing something cool. Share your story. CalUMS-VA invites you to submit your story to be published in an upcoming issue of “Pulse”, our university e-magazine designed to present diverse stories highlighting our alumni, faculty, and students.
Went on a White House tour? Visited Niagara Falls? Got an internship offer? Let us know. Volunteered or contributed to a local charity? You may inspire others to do the same. Had a once in a lifetime experience? Tell us about it—and send the pictures. No story is too small (or too big!).
Original, interesting, and relevant stories should be between 300-500 words. Please note that they may be edited for style, grammar, typographical errors, content, and length. Submit your story as a Microsoft Word document by April 1, 2019 to [email protected]. Include photos as separate files at the highest resolution possible. Photos embedded in Word or Power-Point cannot be used. Note that your submission of photos constitutes permission for them to appear in our e-magazine and on our website.
The writers of the most interesting stories will be offered one of many prizes, including paid annual Amazon Prime membership fee, gift cards and tickets to the major sporting events. Winners will be announced by April 15, 2019.
We look forward to receiving your interesting stories.

"This quote has always been important to me because it indicates that being prepared for whatever you do in life, whether preparing for war or standing in front of the board room, you need to be prepared mentally, physically and educationally to ensure a successful outcome. Our students should see their class work as an extension of preparing for the next step in their careers and so on. Preparedness and hard work equals success."

Dr. Ibrahim Alsaeed elaborates on why he admires this quote from Swiss-born French philosopher Jean-Jacques Rousseau (1712-1778): "It has intrigued me. For sure, money cannot buy morality because true citizens do not compromise on their moral virtues since they’re attached to the citizens’ souls. Money also cannot buy citizens because true citizens link their sphere to their community’s realm. Both are inseparable.
This quotation should prompt us to study this issue through world civilizations, and ancient, medieval, and modern philosophy."
