"Here is my favorite quote and it resonates with me so much given that I have been challenged on my way to becoming who I am today. What has driven me and got me through those challenging times has been passion and hunger for what I wanted to do. This quote reminds me anytime that the road to success is not easy and it reminds me of my father who believed so much in education and hard work. This quote is from the famous Coach Mike Krzyzewski, of the Duke Basketball team." - CalUMS-VA Prof. George Edeh

I often tell my students “16 x 7 x 2”. Practice something for 16 hours a day, 7 days a week, over 2 months and you will be good at it. Good enough to find a job and work in the field. Want to be a developer, a DBA, a network admin? - above is the recipe. This actually is based roughly on my favorite book by Malcolm Gladwell - the Outliers. Below is one of the book’s main promises, which is also a direct quote:

Don't miss out on this opportunity!

Don't miss out on this opportunity!

Want a $50 Chick-Fil-A gift card? Or a ticket to the Washington Capitals game? How about paid Amazon Prime membership fee for a year?

Our students, alumni, faculty, and staff are always doing something cool. Share your story. CalUMS-VA invites you to submit your story to be published in an upcoming issue of “Pulse”, our university e-magazine designed to present diverse stories highlighting our alumni, faculty, and students.

Went on a White House tour? Visited Niagara Falls? Got an internship offer? Let us know. Volunteered or contributed to a local charity? You may inspire others to do the same. Had a once in a lifetime experience? Tell us about it—and send the pictures. No story is too small (or too big!).

Original, interesting, and relevant stories should be between 300-500 words. Please note that they may be edited for style, grammar, typographical errors, content, and length. Submit your story as a Microsoft Word document by April 1, 2019 to [email protected]. Include photos as separate files at the highest resolution possible. Photos embedded in Word or Power-Point cannot be used. Note that your submission of photos constitutes permission for them to appear in our e-magazine and on our website.

The writers of the most interesting stories will be offered one of many prizes, including paid annual Amazon Prime membership fee, gift cards and tickets to the major sporting events. Winners will be announced by April 15, 2019.

We look forward to receiving your interesting stories.

"This quote has always been important to me because it indicates that being prepared for whatever you do in life, whether preparing for war or standing in front of the board room, you need to be prepared mentally, physically and educationally to ensure a successful outcome. Our students should see their class work as an extension of preparing for the next step in their careers and so on. Preparedness and hard work equals success."

Dr. Ibrahim Alsaeed elaborates on why he admires this quote from Swiss-born French philosopher Jean-Jacques Rousseau (1712-1778): "It has intrigued me. For sure, money cannot buy morality because true citizens do not compromise on their moral virtues since they’re attached to the citizens’ souls. Money also cannot buy citizens because true citizens link their sphere to their community’s realm. Both are inseparable.
This quotation should prompt us to study this issue through world civilizations, and ancient, medieval, and modern philosophy."

"This is a quote I love and always inspires me, from Indian poet Rabindranath Tagore. My dad used to say this to me. It basically made me do the things I was afraid of doing and take chances in my life to do meaningful things that I may have never tried for fear of failure. Likewise, I want CalUMS students to be able to tackle anything in life without the fear of failure." –CalUMS-VA Prof. Anil Parthasarathy

How I hacked online dating

Get in the Spirit of Valentine’s Day
Researching information related to Love with a Business and Computer Science approach, we found the father of online dating: Jeff Tarr - a mathematician and Harvard undergraduate who in the mid 60’s wrote up a personality quiz for fellow students about their "ideal date". In order to process the answers, Tarr had to rent a five-ton IBM 1401 computer for $100 an hour, and pay another classmate to program it with a special matching operation.
40 million people date online each year, but most don't find true love. However, some online Dating Services declare 87% leading success rate. How? Well, let’s say, a savvy management of Data mining, big data analytics, relational databases, customized services and of course, algorithms!
For our future savvy language programmers and data relational analysts, get some inspiration form Amy Webb, and how she cracked the online dating code to meet her perfect match.
https://www.ted.com/talks/amy_webb_how_i_hacked_online_dating

Amy Webb was having no luck with online dating. The dates she liked didn't write her back, and her own profile attracted crickets (and worse). So, as any fan of data would do: she started making a spreadsheet. Hear the story of how she went on to hack her online dating life -- with frustrating, funn...

An End to Airline Red Tape—Or Consumer Protection?

For our students taking Public Administration and working on papers related to public efficiency vs private sector efficiency.
Will this news fly you to the sky?
The Department of Transportation (DOT) fines against airlines fell by half last year. Can we say it was a matter of efficiency? The rules matter because DOT is just about the only protection consumers have in the U.S air travel.
What do you think?
https://www.wsj.com/articles/an-end-to-airline-red-tapeor-consumer-protection-1518013800

Airlines want to nix a host of rules that attempt to keep them from mistreating customers. The Transportation Department is considering it.

Review: Dismal Statistics

Y = C + I + G + X
Our students taking Business Statistics and Analysis, as well as Principles of Economics already identify the above formula.
Is GDP the best way to measure a country's economy? Should countries bet on GDP at all cost?
According to David Pilling, Africa editor of the Financial Times and author of The Growth Delusion. Wealth, Poverty and the well-being of Nations, GDP’s four components - personal consumption, business investment, government spending and net exports - should give way to “a new measurement framework that tracks median income in order to keep track of the distribution of gains, and have a sense not just of income flow but of the national balance sheet, including natural assets.” What do you think?

Is Gross Domestic Product—the preferred measure of growth for most economists—still useful for gauging the health of economies? Diane Coyle reviews ‘The Growth Delusion’ by David Pilling.

Saving Main Street With Zoning

For our students taking Public Administration here is how Public Policies, Regulations, Politics and Business converge and interrelate.
Jersey City Mayor, Steven Fulop has 61,839 likes in his page. Jersey City has a population of 264, 152 people. More than 600 small businesses have opened since Fulop became mayor of New Jersey’s second-biggest city in 2013.
What is his formula? In 2015, he put a zoning ordinance that prevents chains such as Starbucks Corp. and Target Corp. from occupying more than 30% of the ground floor of commercial areas of buildings. At least 30 cities and towns across the country, from San Francisco to Mc Call, Idaho, have enacted similar rules.
As future MBAs, what do you think? How powerful do you think this ordinance are in terms of economic development? Should the purpose of zoning regulation be to protect existing businesses from competitors? Should local authorities push to create policies to help small business owners survive?
https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2018-01-26/saving-main-street-with-zoning

Cities restrict chain stores to give local businesses a chance.

Employers Struggle To Make a Dent in Health Costs

For our Students passionated about Social Responsibility, what do you think about this news? which innovative ideas could you bring to the table?
JP Morgan Chase Company, Berkshire Hathaway Inc and Amazon Inc will form a not-for-profit company to reduce costs and improve the healthcare experience of thousands of U.S. employees.
A former executive at Aetna Inc. doubts employer groups have enough clout to change the nature of healthcare delivery and pricing. Data shows that earlier these types of alliance have only been able to obtain cheaper pharmacy-benefit rates. However, they have not been able to completely overhaul, neither transform the health care system and service delivery.
https://www.wsj.com/articles/employers-struggle-to-make-a-dent-in-health-costs-1517502768?mod=searchresults&page=1&pos=1

The planned venture from Amazon.com Inc., Berkshire Hathaway Inc. and JPMorgan Chase & Co. to overhaul their workers’ health care follows years of similar efforts to change an entrenched industry, with mixed success.

Google Rivals Ask EU to Toughen Measures in Antitrust Case

For our students taking Internet marketing and writing a paper on Search Engine Optimization, this news related might motivate you to think about how to create new strategies to push effective behavioral changes in a marketplace that sometimes moves faster than regulators (Antitrust laws).
Google has taken steps to comply with the ruling within the EU by creating a new system that it says treats all comparison-shopping sites equally by letting them bid for desirable product-ad slots at the top of its search results, which it had previously reserved for itself. However, rivals say matters have barely improved and they still struggle to get products listed on the first page of Google’s search results. And when they do, they say it is so costly to outbid Google that they can barely make money.”
https://www.wsj.com/articles/google-rivals-ask-eu-to-toughen-measures-in-antitrust-case-1517334038?mod=searchresults&page=1&pos=1

Google continues to stymie competition in online shopping despite a record fine from European authorities and an order to modify its behavior, rivals say.
