MMAC is a student led organization that aims to provide a safe space for civic-minded student leaders to voice concerns about issues that are affecting the world today. We focus on human rights, social justice, leadership, and advocacy. As young leaders and professionals, we offer our members networking opportunities with various nonprofits and government agencies. Additionally, we encourage students to be civically engaged and be vocal in today’s political discourse.

United for Christchurch Mosque Shootings | LaunchGood

Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji’oon. Indeed, we belong to Allah and to Him we shall return. Our sincerest condolences go to the Masjid Al-Noor and Linwood Masjid communities in Christchurch, New Zealand. We are ranging a series of emotions from anger to sadness to confusion after learning of the terrorist attack. The peddling of Islamophobic rhetoric by politicians and leaders around the world has been excused for too long and this heinous act of violence is the result of it. We pray to Allah for strength to wear our Muslim identity even prouder than before, and always respond to such vile and heinous hatred with kindness and compassion. May Allah grant the victims the status of martyrs and provide patience to the families they’ve left behind. Ameen.

On behalf of the Mason Muslim Affairs Council, our sincerest thoughts and prayers go out to the congregants of the Tree of Life Synagogue, the Pittsburgh Jewish community, and to all of our Jewish sisters and brothers. Under no circumstances should anyone have to fear attending their place of worship in this country. Today’s terrorist attack on our Jewish community is a greater reason why we must always stand together as people of faith and citizens of this country to consistently condemn all and any forms of hate. To our Jewish sisters and brothers - on campus or not - we stand with you, and we are here for you.

TW: sexual assault/violence

We believe Dr. Christine Blasey Ford. We admire her for her bravery and resilience, and like many other Americans, we stand with her.

The men (and women) who commit sexual assault must be held accountable, and that begins with the highest courts in our nation holding Brett Kavanaugh accountable.

Sexual assault/violence is an epidemic that is only just starting to be addressed. It is important for those of us who stand as allies to listen and support survivors as they unfairly have to recall their trauma so publicly just to be believed. As Muslims and as people, we need to make sure that we are creating environments for members in our community where they can feel safe and know that they will be supported.

We believe survivors, and we stand with survivors.

If you are a survivor and need someone to talk to, please call: 800-656-HOPE to reach a 24/7 national and confidential hotline.

It seems like almost every day we learn of another innocent Black man being the target of unnecessary gun violence in our country. Just a week ago, we learned about Botham Jean - a 26 year old college graduate who worked with at-risk boys, visited orphanages, and through every account of people who knew him, an all around incredible human being. And just a couple days ago, we learn of Abdullah Beard - a father and husband who was beloved by his community. Both men were in their homes when killed.

The topic of police brutality requires us all to question our own morality. Are we going to sit back and not say anything, or will we stand up and speak out about a horrific epidemic that has struck the country that we call home? In reality, it shouldn’t matter if someone was a college graduate or if another was a father - they were an innocent human not proving to be a threat to anyone. The deeper question we should be asking ourselves is why, as a society, do we see Black men as a “threat” without taking a moment to pause and assess what is actually going on. We should also be recognizing the systematic problems that our law enforcement faces and advocate for those who are protecting our communities to receive training in things like cultural competency, racial biases, etc.

We are praying for our brothers and sisters in humanity and we ask you all to do the same. In addition to our prayers, we ask you all to take a stand on social issues because when society takes a stand, God-willing we will be able to create long lasting change.
