Mason Muslim Affairs Council - MMAC Student led organization which provides a safe space for civic-minded students to voice concerns about issues that are effecting the world today,

MMAC is a student led organization that aims to provide a safe space for civic-minded student leaders to voice concerns about issues that are affecting the world today. We focus on human rights, social justice, leadership, and advocacy. As young leaders and professionals, we offer our members networking opportunities with various nonprofits and government agencies. Additionally, we encourage students to be civically engaged and be vocal in today’s political discourse.

Salaam and Jummah Mubarak!
Incidents of hate and violence must remind us to reconsider our progress and values as a nation and a global community. This is a call to action in response to the death of George Floyd. Salaam and Jummah Mubarak, we pray your Ramadan is going beautifully and that it has brought growth, peace and blessings in your life 🌙✨

Our community at Mason has always been an inspiring space for conversation— and while those moments had to come to a pause, we decided to encapsulate that spirit in a new form by bringing discussions and conversations to our community in the form of a podcast.

Introducing ChaiVersations: a podcast by GMU MMAC. whether you’re trying to improve yourself spiritually, struggling to adjust to this new normal, or just in need of the comfort of knowing that you’re not alone, we sincerely hope that our initiative can benefit you in some way. our first episode on the virtues of Ramadan drops on IGTV, Facebook and YouTube today— we invite you to sit back, sip some chai (if it’s after iftar), and take a listen ☕️

“A beautiful reminder that every hardship Decreed by Allah (SWT) is not meant to hurt us but rather a test of our patience and faith. We are currently facing one of the most unique tests of our life. With so much fear and uncertainty circulating about COVID-19, let's take this opportunity to reflect and turn to the Source from where true power to overcome is derived. He Alone has the ability to change fortunes at His Will. Stay patient and true on the straight path, and you’ll see the Mercy of Allah (SWT) on display everyday. His Power is reflected like a mirror by all of His Creation on Earth. And none shine brighter during these times than our brave healthcare workers on the frontlines.

To my peers, Stay Home. Stay Safe.” - ‘What moves me’, by Suferah Khan

“No matter what is happening in my life, reflecting on this verse from the Quran puts my heart at ease. It makes me think, why am I not putting my trust in Allah through all of this? When has He ever let me down? We’re all struggling in some way during these times, and some of our struggles might feel unbearable at the moment. But Allah knows, and that keeps me going.”

“I do not know the work of Oriah Moutnain Dewler well but love the sort of poem that urges me to revisit my own idea of the world and of myself. One of my close friends recently shared this poem with me, and I found myself going back to it throughout the week—figuring out which lines and stanzas I felt were most impactful.

I think these lines of the poem are extremely reflective—especially now, when we might not have as many obligations or opportunities to interact with things that have brought us joy (or sadness). It helps me ask myself, what do I truly need? To know what I need, moves me to care about the people and things that matter.”
- “What moves me, pt. 2”, by Omer Yousuf

“I wasn’t introduced to the work of Edward Said until a few semesters back, whilst taking my first class focused strictly on anthropology. His work has become synonymous with the field, and important to those who critique and delve deeper into understanding culture and social reality. This specific quote seems to best embody the need to further one’s understanding of the ideas and concepts that fill books, schools, and modern minds. Admittedly, I have not yet read most of Said’s work, but aim to take the additional time I have now to do so, inshallah.

I have found Said to be an important reminder to look beyond what we are given as history, as culture, as identity. That moves me to think, to write, and to act.”
