It was a privilege to join Cornerstones’ 5th Annual Summer Food and Resource Rally, in partnership with StarKist, Feed the Children, and Floris United Methodist Church, helping provide food support to families, individuals, and seniors across Northern Virginia. As food insecurity continues to impact our region, events like this highlight the importance of strong community partnerships and support for neighbors in need.

Governor Abigail Spanberger signed landmark legislation at the Turning Point Suffragist Memorial in Fairfax County, including the Right to Contraception Act and the Contraception Equity Act, strengthening access to contraception and expanding insurance coverage to make healthcare more affordable and accessible. It was powerful to hear how these protections are tied to real healthcare issues women face every day, and how access to proper and complete healthcare services, not only for reproductive care but for basic medical needs, is an essential right. It was an honor to join state leaders, advocates, and partners from across the Commonwealth for today’s signing and to be part of this important moment at such a meaningful historic site.

As temperatures continue to rise and we enter the summer months, I want to remind residents to take precautions during periods of extreme heat and check in on neighbors, older adults, and others who may be especially vulnerable. When Fairfax County’s Heat Plan is activated, cooling resources are available throughout the county to help residents stay safe. Learn more about extreme heat resources and how to access support here:

Congratulations to all of this year’s high school graduates across Fairfax County. Each year I try to get out and attend as many ceremonies as possible. This year, it was a pleasure to attend the ceremonies for West Springfield High School, Hayfield Secondary School, South County High School, and West Potomac High School. Each graduation is a reminder of the hard work, dedication, and bright futures ahead for our students and families.

June is Gun Violence Awareness Month, a time to raise awareness, support prevention efforts, and honor those impacted by gun violence. Fairfax County recently relaunched its Red Flag Campaign to help residents better understand Virginia’s Extreme Risk Protective Order process and available resources to help prevent harm.

I encourage residents to wear orange on Tuesday, June 9, to recognize National Gun Violence Awareness Day and show support for safer communities. Learn more about the Red Flag Law campaign here: https://www.fairfaxcounty.gov/news/esros-temporarily-removing-firearms-prevent-harm
