Lieutenant Guston has served Mason Police as a LGBTQ+ Liaison Officer since 2010. He is one of only seven representatives selected from the US. Congrats LT! 🏳️‍🌈

As the sun sets on the last day of Asian American & Pacific Islander Heritage Month, we celebrate our officers who represent many different backgrounds and cultures from Asian nations. 🇨🇳🇻🇳🇵🇭🇰🇷

We also appreciate the great partnerships we have with local agencies City of Fairfax Police Department and Northern Virginia Community College Police Department who are out there giving us a hand with the dozens of graduations taking place on campus this month.

This position pays $28 per hour / $56 per hour during call-back hours (outside of normal working hours).

Responsibilities include:

• Cutting keys, working with BEST cores, installing locks, troubleshooting lock and key systems, and assisting with Masterkey systems in new construction and renovations

Traffic safety & service! While on patrol of the Fairfax campus this afternoon, Cpl. Frields and Sgt. Willis found a disabled motorist who had run out of gas near the Mason Parking & Transportation Sandy Creek Transit Center. Not only did they facilitate getting the correct fuel for the vehicle, but they helped fill the tank too! Great work gentleman!

April 27th is DEA Drug Take Back Day, but every day is Drug Take Back Day at Mason PD. Yes, 24/7/365 we have a publicly accessible CVS Pharmacy Medication Disposal Drop Box in our lobby. Lt. Guston started this project in 2018, and since then, has collected about 100lbs per year of unused prescription drugs. Unfortunately, one driver who did not pass through our checkpoint ended up on the side of the road. Which is why we are out here with a mission to deter dangerous driving behavior.

Uh oh! We've heard some concerns about speeding on campus! We're out here to remind you to slow down and be mindful of the safety of the community and the campus-wide 25mph speed limit. So far, we've talked to some drivers doing nearly double that speed limit. Slow down, phone down, drive safe, and be courteous when sharing the road.

You may have seen a different type of vehicle parked in the West Lot yesterday which was part of George Mason University Army ROTC aviation training. Officers and police cadets enjoyed coming out to support their critically important training event and learning a little bit about aviation safety as well.

Timely Warning Notification - Motor Vehicle Thefts (Electric Scooters) on Fairfax Campus:

Mason has experienced several incidents of electric scooter thefts on the Fairfax campus in recent days:

• March 26, 2024 / Case # 24-003492 – President’s Park (near Roosevelt and Jackson Hall)

• March 26, 2024 / Case # 24-003482 - Outside of Ike’s

• February 25, 2024 / Case # 24-002192 - Outside of Manhattan Pizza

• February 21, 2024 / Case # 24-002045 - Shenandoah River Lane / Roberts Road

Although the electric scooters are secured to bike racks, suspects have been able to bypass locks and steal the electric scooters. Students should take their electric scooters indoors whenever possible or use additional means, like high-quality U-locks, to secure electric scooters to bike racks. Additionally, to aid in the recovery of stolen electric scooters, students are encouraged to install tracking devices, such as Air Tags, to electric scooters.

This week Mason Police officers traveled to for joint SWAT training with Virginia Tech Police, University of Virginia Police Department and Falls Church Police.

Officers practiced tactical scenarios including hostage negotiation and hostage rescue.

Congratulations to our two newest graduates of the regional Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) training program - Officer Pham and Communications Officer Hoch. This program trains first responders in the Northern Virginia region to effectively respond to behavioral health crises and help connect community members with resources.
