My Fairfax 50 - Special Edition ( #12) Youth Sports Forum

More conversations need to happen like the first-of-its-kind Youth Sports Forum last night. In collaboration with Councilmember Billy Bates and with the generous support of former Councilmember Jon Stehle, we were able secure nationally-recognized guest from the Aspin Institute and a youth sports author and advocate to facilitate a discussion around what we envision in the City of Fairfax, framed by the Children's Bill of Rights in Sports. Thank you to panelists from the Fairfax Police Youth Club, Little League, Parks and Rec Advisory Board, our Parks and Rec director and facilities scheduling. Much appreciation to all who attended.

After the formal event ended, great commitment and responsiveness was demonstrated by a more specific discussion where the openness of FPYC was matched by the passion and determination of community parents. What's important is what happens next in the spirit of starting where we are and collaboratively working towards a better future without sacrificing the city's position on broad sports accessibility.

It is an honor as a councilmember to host spaces where challenging conversations can potentially lead to respectful communication and impactful new collaborations.

My Fairfax 50! #11 - Spotlight on the Arts at the Stacy C. Sherwood Community Center.

Make no mistake: A city that honors the arts in all forms, honors the rich dimensionality of the the human experience! Once again, it is my privilege to witness the vast talent we have in and around our city. At the kickoff, the visual art pieces were inspired, while the musical performances were moving. So impressed with the gifts our youth have to offer the world.

Also, delighted to attend this event at the Community Center that in the future will be part of the Willard-Sherwood complex unanimously supported by city council on 4/28. So many wonderful events, services, and ongoing opportunities for the community to "Live Life Connected" will happen HERE!

My Fairfax 50! This 10th highlight is the annual Home for Life Expo at the Sherwood Center hosted by the Village in the City on April 10th!

So grateful to have a husband who was willing to kickoff his birthday by serving others! Also honored to have been a Silver-level sponsor for this event which showcased resources, lectures, and community information aimed at helping older and/or dependent adults stay safely in their homes and in our city.

Did you know that for quite some time, our Village was the only one in the nation supported by its local jurisdiction and not membership fees? We are still one of only three with this model, demonstrating the GREAT WORK that happens when we invest in supportive prevention and social connection. Being the City Council liaison to the Village is one of the absolute delights of my tenure as a councilmember!

Thanks for supporting this event, Mayor Read, City Manager Dan Alexander, and Councilmember Anthony Amos! Deep appreciation to all others who exhibited and attended!!

My Fairfax 50! CIVIC CONNECTION

Today, my 9th city highlight is the kickoff of the second cohort of an exceptional engagement experience! For the next 6-7 weeks, residents and business owners will gather at various locations throughout the city and interact with our staff to learn about how our city and local government work.

Led by Jennifer Rose, Executive Director of the Central Fairfax Chambers of Commerce, this is a unique cross-departmental opportunity that enriches our community on multiple levels. It is noteworthy that 2 graduates of the first cohort will be running for city council!!

My Fairfax 50! 8 and counting at Mackenzie's Tunes & Tonics

A great "twofer!"

First, what a nice comfortable setting to catch up and have dinner with my pal Sarah White. Loved hearing about her fascinating experience an ashram in the Bahamas! Ran into a very warm and friendly group called WISE Connent who were also there having a great time socializing. Btw, I highly recommend the beef gyros as a salad...DE-LISH!

Later that same evening, Mackenzie's hosted an event for Carl Setzer who is running in Ohio's 14th District. Council members past, present (me) and hopefully our future were in attendance as Carl shared his journey from growing up in and environment of hate and fear, to running for office to serve and bring people together. Organized by former Councilmember Jon Stehle, our Mayor, Catherine Read expertly moderated this inspired event highlighting local relevance.

Many diverse experiences in one evening at an Old Town treasure!

My Fairfax 50! Week 7: Night to Shine (N2S)

This one is "Fairfax City adjacent!"

On February 13th faith communities globally sponsored a "prom night" for people aged 14 to 60+ with special needs. I was one of 72 Buddies assigned to host a guest for the evening and it was a blast!

At the Fairfax Church of Christ they had a makeup and hair styling room, shoe shine station, video game room, karaoke room, limousine rides, bowling lanes, therapy dogs, lots of food and dancing...and end of the night a crowning ceremony and huge balloon drop!!

While this event did not technically take place within the city limits, it reminds me of our regional position and how important it is to take the the time to connect with those around us!

My Fairfax 50! Week 6 at Draper's Steak & Seafood in Historic Old Town

F.F.F.S.P.!
F F & F - Friends, Food & Fun - always wonderful to reconnect with my Oxonian pal Greg Roberts and lovely his family. These days when there's a choice, I tend to insist on meeting folks at Fairfax City locations and was delighted to introduce my friends to Draper's for a pre-Super Bowl brunch!

S - Service - the hospitality came in abundance! Our server Hannah's professionalism, patience and dry humor made our morning even more fun. (Btw, "the mimosa game" was a blast!! Who knew?!)

P - Partnership - I deeply appreciate Fairfax City Economic Development's involvement with businesses like Draper's as part of their strategic work and dedication.

Tonight, Mayor Catherine Read declared February Black History Month in . Accepting the proclamation were Fairfax City native Stacey Yvonne Claytor, founder and CEO of C4 Performing Arts; Dr. Michael Nickens (Doc Nix), associate professor of music and director of athletic bands at George Mason University, including Doc Nix & The Green Machine, a student and community band; and Bobby Lacy II, associate director of Mason’s Green Machine ensembles.

celebrates the diversity of Black people in the City of Fairfax, the commonwealth, and in our nation, whether they self-identify as African, African American, Afro-Latino, Afro-Caribbean, or Black.

We celebrate this year’s Black History Month theme of “A Century of Black History Commemorations,” marking 100 years since national Negro History Week began. Launched by Dr. Carter G. Woodson, the “Father of Black History,” the week grew into an annual celebration, and in 1986, the U.S. Congress designated February as Black History Month. (Fairfax’s Woodson High School was renamed in Dr. Woodson’s honor in 2024.)

As this nation celebrates the 250th anniversary this year, it is incumbent on us to live up to the founding ideals of this country that all people are “created equal” by acknowledging the contributions of those Black Americans who have been here from the very first moments of our nation’s founding and have always contributed in myriad ways to what makes America great.

My Fairfax 50! Week 5 - Black History Month @ City Hall

After the storm, while taking care of some tasks, I found myself alone in the atrium with the statue of MLK, Jr. that is back in celebration of Black History Month. Away from the formal acknowledgements to come, this quiet moment in a space dedicated to serving the residents of our city filled me with profound humility and gratitude.

Our history is prelude to our future. And I am so honored to be a part of this chapter in our city's collective story.

Throughout the year, art, displays, receptions, and even performances in the city hall atrium offer a communal space for ALL to share in our city's vibrant and expanding culture. Whether there on business or to have your voice heard at a city council meeting, take a moment in the atrium to reflect on all that our city is becoming!

My Fairfax 50! Week 4 @ Kelly's Oyster House and Bar

Congratulations Sarah Bolton White!

So happy to share in the celebration of my dear friend, former Fairfax Co. colleague, and NPR Nerd Night pal's retirement from the Fairfax County Health Dept! After years of service to our region which also included the Dept of Family Services (where we first met), and Neighborhood and Community Services, she is transitioning to what promises to be her best phase ever!!

Also delighted that she chose a Fairfax City location to mark this tremendous milestone. Thank you Bill Hamrock for another evening of great food and service! Whether for a special occasion or a regular night out, Kelly's Oyster House and its sister Fairfax City establishment, Hamrock's Restaurant are great places go!!
