Recently, some City of Fairfax residents have experienced their shoes missing off their porches. After investigation, input from our community and some “digging” by Historic Blenheim/Civil War Interpretive Center, it was determined that area foxes were taking the shoes and using them as toys in their dens! 🦊👟🥾👠

In continuing with National Animal Care and Control Appreciation Week, we would like to highlight ACO Joyce Holden!

Animal Control Officer Joyce Holden began her career as an Animal Control Officer with the City of Fairfax in July 1996. Prior to coming to work for the City, ACO Holden worked as a veterinary assistant and receptionist for 12 years. She also owned and ran her own pet-sitting business throughout her college years and continued with the business until she moved from a part-time Animal Control position with the City to a full-time one in 2000. ACO Holden grew up in the area, graduating from W.T. Woodson High School and George Mason University (with a B.S. in Business Administration). She also grew up working with horses, dogs, cats and many other domestic animals, helping her mother who ran a boarding facility and taught riding lessons on a daily basis. She has carried her love for and knowledge of animals into her career with the City. ACO Holden has earned a Distinguished Service Award, along with 2 other Awards for outstanding service over her 24 year career. ACO Holden continues to show her commitment to animal welfare and the safety of our City residents. Temporarily, ACO Holden has switched gears in order to cover an essential but vacant position in our Communications Center until the current state of emergency has been cleared.

Animal Control Officer Holden has been married for 27 years. She has a 35 year old step-son and a 14 year old granddaughter. ACO Holden enjoys spending time with her family, attending local music events, the beach and playing fetch with her 4 dogs.

We are glad to have Joyce on our team and she gets a thanks for both NACCW and NPSTW!!

City of Fairfax Police Department

As part of National Animal Care and Control Appreciation Week, we wanted to highlight one of our ACOs! ACO Terry Carroll wanted to share the below information!!

My name is Terry Carroll and I am proud to be an Animal Control Officer (ACO) with the City of Fairfax Police Department. I came to the department on November 10, 2014, after an extensive career as a contractor with the federal government. I have served as Operations Manager with NASA, on the Space Station Project, as well as Program Manager with the Defense Department, within the Defense Information Systems Agency (DISA). My last experience working with the federal government was with Verizon Business – Federal. I served as Contract Manager providing contingent workforce management, not only domestically but throughout India and the Philippines. I also have experience in the energy sector, while working as an Inspector with Columbia Gas of Virginia. I traveled a great deal throughout the United States while working as an Association Manager. My clients were the National Association of Corporate Treasurers and the National Renal Administrators Association. I am also a proud graduate of East Tennessee State University, where I received a Bachelor of Science degree in Communications, served as Campus Senator and was the President of my fraternity, Lambda Chi Alpha.

Throughout the many phases of my career, I have always served the pubic in some fashion. It’s a part of me, and it’s what I like best about being an Animal Control Officer. Of course I love animals. You can’t do this job properly unless you do. I believe growing up on a dairy farm instilled in me, the love and respect for animals that is such a big part of this job.

In my free time I am very involved in my Church, where I serve as President and Chairman of the Board of Directors. I am also a Deacon and sing in the Church choir. My faith in God is what sustains me and feeds my soul. I also love nature, hiking, fishing and gardening. I’m up for any activity that gets me outside and keeps me active.

We are glad to have ACO Carroll as part of our team, and he performs various tasks for us and you may have seen him helping out on school crossings back when it was in session!

Have a great day!
