Each year Hand Hygiene Day is observed on May 5. While it is always a good reminder, this year it takes on added significance as handwashing is critical in slowing the spread of COVID-19.

Disease can spread when a virus gets on our hands from a contaminated surface and then we touch our eyes, nose or mouth where it causes infection. Handwashing is one of the most important and easiest actions you can take to lower your chance of getting sick and spreading germs to others.

Here are six steps to proper handwashing:
Step 1️⃣: Start with warm water.
Step 2️⃣: Use soap to make a lather.
Step 3️⃣: Scrub for 20 seconds.
Step 4️⃣: Rinse well.
Step 5️⃣: Dry hands completely.
Step 6️⃣: Use towel to shut off faucet.

One month to go until Vienna shuts down for the summer.

One month to go until Vienna shuts down for the summer.

Making the most of historically low ridership and traffic-free highways, yesterday we announced plans to combine the schedules of our two biggest capital priorities in Virginia: rebuilding platforms and connecting the Silver Line to Metro’s existing network.

Under the expanded plan, Metro will combine this summer’s platform reconstruction work at four Orange Line stations with a separate project on the Silver Line to connect Metrorail to the new “phase II” stations, which are being constructed by the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority (MWAA).

The resulting summer shutdown will close a total of nine stations from Memorial Day weekend through the fall.

Beginning today, Metro is reducing service, which will also allow for additional disinfecting of railcars and buses. As a reminder, if you are not feeling well, do NOT take public transportation and call your healthcare provider before leaving home.

As of 2 p.m., Friday, March 13, Metro has further escalated its response to Phase 3 of its Pandemic Flu Plan. Phase 3 is the highest level of response and will include all subsequent mitigation steps required during the public health emergency. Metro expects to be at Phase 3 until further notice. Phase 4 is the “recovery phase” of the plan that involves Metro’s return to normal operations after the situation is under control.

Thanks to Anna and Elizabeth of Metro West and the WABA volunteers! It was a great ride. As an amateur historian, I found the Jeremiah Moore burial site most interesting. My curiosity was activated, so I did a little more research about Jeremiah Moore.
