Beginning Monday, February 15, Metrorail service changes will take effect to normalize weekday rail service throughout the day. During peak and off-peak hours, trains will operate at the same service frequencies through the evening rush hour. The changes will improve service consistency throughout the day to better match customers’ travel patterns during the pandemic.

In addition, Metro plans to expand service for bus customers beginning March 14, to provide additional capacity.

Great news for Metro riders and workers! 👏

Great news for Metro riders and workers! 👏

Transit riders and visitors to the nation’s capital now enjoy one of the most connected wireless experiences of any rail system in the U.S. with coverage available in all tunnels – as Metro, AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon announce wireless service in rail tunnels systemwide.

With Metro's 100-mile tunnel network now connected, customers can communicate or stream content throughout their journey from the street to the station and in the train. The latest coverage additions will add to safety and security by improving mobile communication for customers, Metro employees and first responders in the event of an emergency.

“Bringing this project to the finish line gives riders added security and all the conveniences of wireless connectivity. Customers can text, talk, and explore the internet and apps, including Metro’s mobile payment options to load value and manage their SmarTrip account while traveling on Metro.” - GM/CEO Paul J. Wiedefeld

Autonomous Electric Shuttle Pilot Project
-
Passengers can now get a free, zero-emissions ride from the Mosaic District to the Dunn Loring Metrorail station on an electric autonomous shuttle! On Oct. 22, federal, state, and local officials joined Fairfax County and Dominion Energy to celebrate the launch of passenger service on Relay. The first publicly funded autonomous electric shuttle and test of driverless technology in public transportation in the Commonwealth of Virginia is now in operation. This pilot project is a public-private partnership between Fairfax County, Dominion Energy, EDENS (Mosaic District developer), Virginia Department of Rail and Public Transportation (VDRPT), Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT), Virginia Tech Transportation Institute (VTTI), and George Mason University (GMU).

Thanks to Anna and Elizabeth of Metro West and the WABA volunteers! It was a great ride. As an amateur historian, I found the Jeremiah Moore burial site most interesting.
