Food for Others

Food for Others Foodbank in NOVA Food for Others is Northern Virginia’s primary safety net for those needing food when an emergency strikes, and for the growing number of working poor who are unable to make ends meet and need to supplement their inadequate food supplies.
(13)

Food for Others obtains much of its food through food rescue operations and food drives. Staff and volunteers pick up good food that would be thrown away from local grocery stores and other retail food establishments. The food is brought to the warehouse for temporary storage, including refrigeration as appropriate. Food drives provide most of our non-perishable food.

Mission: Food for Others was founded in 1995 with a mission to distribute food to our neighbors in need by mobilizing our giving community and volunteers.

Sending a special shout out to one of our Rockstar volunteers, Diane! Diane has been a volunteer with FFO since 2009 & comes in every week to help us sort donations, stock shelves, and prepare food for our community partners. Last week, Diane helped the warehouse staff quickly weigh in and make room for new donations during the Thanksgiving rush. We couldn't have gotten through it without her!

About Jake:

Jake is a multi-instrumentalist who plays and sings as a solo artist under the name Musicminded Jake - Jake Sizemore Music. He was diagnosed with autism at the age of 2 and the doctor who diagnosed him recommended he be placed in an institution. His parents refused. He started teaching himself to play the keyboard at the age of 3, the guitar at age 8. He has performed at wineries, festivals, local venues and charity and political events.

Jake is currently a student at Lake Braddock Secondary School and a member of the advanced guitar ensemble and jazz band. In 2015, Jake was Fairfax County Public School’s first ever National winner of the Council for Exceptional Children’s “Yes I Can Award” and he was a semi-finalist in the 2017 Vienna Idol competition.

Jake has significant challenges communicating but his perfect pitch, astounding memory for music, and great stage presence has given him a path to a bright future. He is the ultimate example of #abilityindisability.

America at Hunger’s Edge

One in eight American families is not getting enough to eat right now. This photo essay published in The New York Times shows what life has been like for food insecure families. Though the photos do not show Fairfax County, more than 100,000 in our area are expected to face food insecurity within the next year. This month, you can help families by participating in FFO's #HungerActionChallenge. Visit our website for details. https://nyti.ms/2ELZzbd

We spent months photographing dozens of families across the country to understand what food insecurity looks like today.
