James A Beck House

James A Beck House Greetings from Fairfield, Iowa! With great house comes great responsibility. Barber Queen Anne Victorian House. Beck and designed by architect George F. Barber.

So we started a page to detail, document, and share our restoration and history of this 1896 George F. Construction of the house began in 1895 by James A. Design No. 27 from the Cottage Souvenir 4th edition Barber catalog. The carriage was also built by J.A. Beck in May of that same year. The House was sold in June 1913 to The Ball Family and known through this time as "Ball Mansion" unti

l their deaths in 1960 and 1962. More commonly known today as the "Sloca House" for the family that lived in the house from 1964-2001.

The Bats are Back in Town!!!

Long history of bats in the belfry here at the James A Beck House
Which is how we got our original mantle back that was taken out of the house to resolve a bat issue back in the 1970s.

But last night marked the first night of their return since we have been here.
Caught 1 earlier today but then later this evening we found another
flying down the hallway of the 2nd floor as it flew down the main staircase to the first floor.
We caught it and released it but after talking to previous owners it will likely return. So might be time to break out the Batmitten Rackets and find how they are making their way in.
Its always something...

A very great, productive, and informative, meeting at City Hall today with our city councilman Bob Ferguson and city administrator Doug Reinert regarding solutions for the parking and traffic issues we had for the recent barn tour.
Looking forward to the next tour.
Thanks again city of Fairfield

But if you have no idea what I'm talking about it was also the focus of our last video

Not sure what to expect here at the James A Beck House but just a reminder there is no parking on Burlington or D st and would suggest parking at the High school behind the house on East Broadway.

There is some driveway here for parking for anyone who might be limited to that walk.

Buried Treasure!
After wrapping on last weeks video I continued clearing and leveling the horse stall and found a ton of broken glass, bottles jugs, china, and URANIUM GLASS!!

Some quick research brought up for the china which had a makers mark Allertons (made in England) dating between 1859-1942.
The Old Mr. Boston Bottle from the early 1930s which was for whiskey and can be found on ebay for about 10 bucks.
Which of course I bought.

But in case you missed it
