The California Highway Patrol continues to make progress in the fight against organized retail crime.

From August 1st–9th, CHP’s Organized Retail Crime Task Force joined more than 100 law enforcement agencies nationwide for the National Organized Retail Crime Blitz, conducting coordinated enforcement operations at businesses, shopping centers, and retail stores across California.

The results:
• 97 suspects arrested, including 8 on felony charges
• More than 8,500 stolen items recovered
• Approximately $1.05 million in stolen merchandise recovered

These efforts build on last year’s success and reflect CHP’s continued commitment to holding organized retail theft suspects accountable and protecting California businesses and communities.

The air brake chamber pictured here didn’t fail because of a sudden defect, it deteriorated over time until the corrosion compromised the integrity of the spring housing, resulting in a catastrophic failure.

While surface rust is common on commercial vehicles, corrosion that affects the structural integrity of brake components is an entirely different matter. Air brake chambers operate under significant spring force and air pressure. When rust is allowed to weaken these components, failure can occur without warning. Preventative maintenance isn’t just about keeping trucks moving, it’s about protecting everyone sharing the road.

During a recent inspection, an inspector identified bulging air lines on the brake system of a commercial motor vehicle when air pressure was applied. Bulging air lines are an indication that the hose integrity has been compromised and may result in a sudden air system failure. Fortunately, this violation was located before the vehicle continued down the highway. Replacing damaged air lines is essential to maintaining a safe and reliable air brake system.

This tire does not have any air pressure and has separated from the bead of the wheel. A tire not connected to an operable automatic tire inflation system (ATIS) which has a noticeable leak in the tread area, or has 50% or less of the maximum inflation pressure marked on the tire sidewall is considered an Out-of-Service violation.

Driving with a tire in this condition significantly increases the risk of a blowout, loss of vehicle control and serious crashes.

The friction surface of the brake drum and the brake friction material on this steer axle were both contaminated by oil. As a result, this commercial vehicle was placed Out-of Service until it was properly cleaned and repaired. Oil contaminated brake components reduce braking performance and create a serious safety hazard for everyone on the road.
