🚦 FAIRFIELD SPEED CAMERAS: WHERE IS THE MONEY GOING?

Town leaders say the speed camera program is about safety. Everyone supports safer roads and protecting children near schools.

But residents are asking a simple question:

đź’° If the program is projected to generate millions in revenue, why isn't there a dedicated safety fund or public safety spending plan?

According to Town officials, the revenue will flow into Fairfield's surplus fund. Yet there has been no clear explanation of how the money will be reinvested into school zones, pedestrian safety, traffic calming, or other roadway improvements.

As First Selectwoman Christine Vitale recently stated, "We're all in this together."

If we're truly all in this together, residents deserve transparency and accountability.

âť“ Where will the money go?
âť“ What specific safety improvements will be funded?
âť“ Why isn't there a dedicated safety fund?

What do you think? Should speed camera revenue be dedicated to safety improvements in Fairfield?

Fairfield’s RTM — controlled 37-3 by Democrats — just rubber stamped a $400 million operating budget that includes millions in projected speeding fine revenue.

Last year, instead of installing tangible traffic calming measures around schools like flashing lights and speed tables, the RTM adopted an ordinance focused on extracting financial restitution from residents through speeding fines.

Now it’s been revealed that the Bike & Pedestrian Committee had actually recommended speed tables, but that proposal never materialized.

The approved budget includes school funding and public safety investments.

🚦 FAIRFIELD SPEED CAMERAS: SAFETY INITIATIVE OR REVENUE PLUG — YOU DECIDE

The Vitale Administration has a financial problem: a reported $500,000 budget deficit if speed camera fines do not go live on June 1st.

What was never discussed?
• Flashing school zone lights
• Solar-powered digital speed signs
• Raised crosswalks

Instead, the proposal is to fine drivers 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year, all in the name of “school safety.”

Meanwhile, a for-profit commercial company stands to rake in millions in collection fees, taking real money out of our local economy.

If this is truly about safety, then let’s implement real safety measures first, with a smarter, better-planned rollout by the First Selectperson’s Office that prioritizes prevention before punishment.

Tell the First Selectperson to pause this program until a more reasonable plan is put in place.

Today, we honor and remember the brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country and our freedoms. 🇺🇸

Memorial Day is more than a long weekend — it is a time to reflect on the courage, service, and selflessness of those who gave everything in defense of our nation.

May we never forget their sacrifice. God bless our fallen heroes, their families, and the United States of America.

Speed Camera Controversy Continues for Vitale Administration as News Cameras Descend on Fairfield.

Residents remain upset over obscure signage, confusing messaging, and excessive ticketing 24 hours a day 7 days a week that goes beyond necessary school safety.

Comments should be directed to the First Selectperson: [email protected]

Speed cameras in Fairfield school zones have been live for three weeks and have already caught people driving too fast more than 114,000 times.

FAIRFIELD SPEED CAMERAS ARE LIVE: The Town says this program is about safety, but many residents are asking whether it is becoming a new form of taxation.

In just the first 18 days:
• 114,071 warnings were issued
• 72,000 came from just two locations
• June revenue is projected at approximately $3.2 million

Beginning June 1st, warnings become fines:
• First offense: $50 fine + $15 processing fee = $65 total
• Additional offenses: $75 fine + $15 processing fee = $90 total

Everyone supports protecting children and improving safety near schools. But residents are raising legitimate concerns about:
⚠️ 24/7 enforcement in “school zones”
⚠️ Confusing or inconsistent signage
⚠️ Excessive ticket volumes
⚠️ Budget reliance on citation revenue
⚠️ The growing financial burden on Fairfield families

Another nine locations are already under consideration for additional cameras.

Before expanding the program further, the Town should evaluate whether the current rollout is truly improving safety and whether the enforcement structure aligns with the program’s stated purpose.

Residents deserve transparency, reasonable enforcement, and meaningful safety improvements — not just automated ticketing.
