I wrote the following on a private FB page for parents in Fairfield. As I am not comfortable with the fact that it IS "private," and in the interests of full transparency, I am including it below:
-------------------
I have been very clear for months that I am in favor of a full return of our students to in-person learning.
I am very much looking forward to hearing the plan for that full return, with dates, which Superintendent Cummings will be communicating to the BoE and public at our Special meeting in a few weeks.
We know that all lunch issues will be addressed via the building-specific plans which all principals are submitting by Feb. 18th. I look forward to working with staff in any capacity to make that happen.
However, before parents misdirect their anger, it seems to need repeating that the absolute primary issue regarding lunch from Day One has been ensuring social distancing. To target one specific food allergy policy and/or the children for whom that policy affords their legal protections and/or the parents who advocate for their children is unproductive, misplaced, and completely at-odds with how policy comes to be. NO parent wrote our policy; NO parent is singlehandedly responsible for its contents. The Board's policy committee took up that policy because of a change in state statute that required we re-examine our existing policy and make it compliant. We did this work in conjunction with many stake-holders across the town. We have re-examined that policy as issues have arisen and modified accordingly.
If anyone has questions about the policy, I would be happy to address them. If anyone has questions about the specific re-opening plan, with dates, that will be presented at our upcoming special meeting, I guess I would say to stay-tuned and to continue to voice your views and suggestions to Mr. Cummings, to Sands Cleary, and to the BoE.
