An educational skeleton hunt! ☠️

In 1971, a paleontologist walking a hillside in northeastern Nebraska noticed a small skull eroding out of the ground. It belonged to a baby rhinoceros, and it turned out to be the first of hundreds.

When excavations began, they revealed rhinos, horses, camels and other animals buried in a thick layer of volcanic ash around what had once been a watering hole. Many skeletons were complete and still articulated, and some rhinos still had fossilized seeds from their last meal in their mouths.

The ash came from an eruption around 12 million years ago at a volcanic hotspot hundreds of miles away, in what's now southwestern Idaho. Winds carried it across the Great Plains, and as animals breathed it in, the smaller species died first while the large rhinos held on longer.

Eventually the rhinos grew too weak to leave the water, and wind drifted more ash over their bodies until the whole scene was buried. The site is now Ashfall Fossil Beds State Historical Park, where visitors can see the bones still lying around a watering hole that dried up millions of years ago.
