Last week, Rabbi Evan Schultz, head Rabbi at Congreagation B’Nai Israel in Bridgeport, shared on his page that the Menorah outside of the synagogue had been vandalized. Built by a Holocaust survivor whose grandchildren grew up in the Congregation, the Menorah was lit for Hannukkah the night it was damaged. It served as a symbol of light and hope not only for the B’Nai Israel community, but all of us, the surrounding neighbors and passersby. Anything I share cannot fully convey the depth of my sadness and anger. With antisemitism on the rise and acts of hatred and intolerance increasing and even encouraged in some places, it is incumbent upon all of us to reject these acts.

Rabbi Schultz is a respected leader and friend. In his writing he shared, “Congregants tell me how exhausted they are. How this feels different from anything they’ve seen before in this country. And somehow each time we raise ourselves out of the pit.” I share this perspective with you, as this is what the people of B’Nai Israel and our local Jewish community is feeling in the face of this incident.

I have spoken with Chief Porter who is fully aware of the incident and has assured me that a thorough investigation is underway. I look forward to connecting with Rabbi Schultz and other members of the B’Nai community to provide support and action. And I look forward to joining with all members of the community who reject antisemitism and work actively for justice, peace, and understanding.

It’s not too late to get your flu shot and an updated COVID vaccine as we continue this holiday season. Both are recommended for everyone over 6 months of age and RSV is also recommended for those pregnant or over 60. These shots can help prevent serious infection, hospitalization, and even death.

Measles is now here in an unvaccinated CT 10 year old. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommendations for childhood vaccines, including measles and Hepatitis B can prevent childhood disease. Our high rate of measles vaccination here in Connecticut helps to keep children and adults safe. Let’s work to keep it that way!

Yesterday I was honored to join Office of Governor Ned Lamont, legislative colleagues, pro homes advocates, and a bipartisan group of chief elected officials for the ceremonial bill signing of House Bill 8002. The bill will help our communities build more diverse, affordable, and sustainable housing.

A tremendous thanks to State Representative Jason Rojas, House Majority Leader, whose steadfast support and determination led to this result. Thank you also to the many partners, including Rep Rojas’ team, and all of the legislative leaders, caucus and committee chairs who have championed these solutions.

Whether you want to call it a housing crisis or not, we need more housing and more options for families, seniors, young people, and employers. I will continue to say that Just Say No was a failed drug prevention policy in the 1980s and it is a failed development strategy for CT today. We need smart growth, growth where we as communities decide it is best, and that satisfies both the economic and moral imperative.

Some of Connecticut’s leading business voices agree with Governor Lamont, Reps. Leeper, Keitt and me about what our new housing bill does to empower towns and cities. We published a piece in the Fairfield Patch last week. In today’s Hartford Courant you can hear from two respected non-elected voices.

Yale School of Management leaders Jeffrey Sonnefeld and Stephen Henriques have outlined the key aspects of the bill, highlighting the common ground that was reached by multiple state and local leaders from both parties. They recognized the shortcomings of housing growth policies to date and remind readers that, “Towns will decide where their housing belongs.”

The five of us who wrote are not the only ones who agree that this bill was common ground. “The comprehensive housing bill is the result of extensive conversations with mayors, selectmen, and legislators from both sides of the aisle. Republican state legislators claim it compromises local control, yet local officials — Republican and Democrat — widely disagree and have continued to support the bill. Municipal associations, major cities, and small towns have also endorsed the bill.”

Industry leaders across Connecticut agree we need to do more to increase the diversity and supply of housing in our state.

Statement on HB 5002 - aka The Housing Bill

As a State Representative for both Fairfield and Bridgeport, I’ve seen firsthand how the lack of housing diversity, affordability, and availability affects nearly every aspect of people’s lives. As co-chair of the Public Health Committee and former co-chair of the Planning and Development Committee, I know that where and how people live directly shapes their health outcomes, access to education, job opportunities, transportation options, public safety, and their ability to build a future. Connecticut’s employers tell us the same story again and again: they can’t fill critical roles in healthcare, education, and other key industries because housing is too expensive and too scarce. If we want our communities and our economy to thrive, we must take bold, coordinated action on housing.

That’s why I strongly supported House Bill 5002. It was a thoughtful, balanced effort to help communities plan for the housing they need – on their terms – that did not impose mandates to build. It provided tools including funding prioritization, planning resources, grants for first-time homebuyers, rental assistance pilots, and support for middle housing. Fairfield stood to gain from leveraging its existing work on transit-oriented development. Bridgeport would benefit from a more equitable regional approach, so the burden of affordability doesn’t fall solely on our urban centers.

The Governor’s veto is a setback, a missed opportunity, and halts progress on a crisis that demands urgent attention. But I will not stop seeking solutions that reflect our communities’ needs and values. I remain committed to working with the Governor, municipal leaders, advocates, and residents across the state to ensure we make meaningful progress. The status quo is failing too many families. We must do better and I intend to make sure we do.

Last week, the House passed broad, bipartisan legislation that supports reproductive health care, which provides minors to access birth control, prenatal care, and allows minors to talk to trusted medical professionals.

CT Working Families Party focuses their efforts on just that - working families. Paid sick and paid family leave, increasing the Earned Income Tax Credit, raising the minimum wage - all policies that CT WFP championed and I have proudly supported. These are economically sound ways to help support our workforce. Those extra minimum wage dollar and the EITC money goes right back into the local economy. I look forward to ongoing partnership with the CT Working Families Party to help CT families.

With Hurricane Milton destroying communities across Florida and Hurricane Helene recovery ongoing, I am even more determined to go back to Hartford and join neighbors, advocates and colleagues to enact policies to avoid climate catastrophes. Rising sea temperatures are super fuel to these hurricanes, making them stronger and more deadly as they reach land.

Last year in the house, our colleagues State Representative Christine Palm and Rep. John Michael Parker helped lead passage of a bill that would help protect our environment and make some of the many changes we need for a safer, greener, more livable planet. We need to go back and get those changes through the Senate.

I know that CT League of Conservation Voters and the CT Sierra Club will be leaders in this effort. I am so honored to have been endorsed by these organizations and to work alongside them to make these changes.

As the world marks one year since the October 7th Hamas attack in Israel, I join all who mourn the death of the innocent victims killed that day. I pray for the safe return of the hostages, an end to war, and peace in the Middle East.

As our Jewish family members, neighbors, and friends face a dangerous and unacceptable rise in anti-semitism, I call upon all of us to put a stop to this and all forms of hatred.

The ballot box, civil disobedience, organizing, debate, the courts, and discourse & negotiation - these are the tools of democracy we use to create change in our country.

Violence, in particular gun violence, is never the answer, political or otherwise. As a military family member, I treasure the right to debate and disagree freely as a pillar of the democracy my family fought to defend. I mourn for our country, the victims of yesterday’s shooting, and pray former President Trump makes a complete recovery.

Today’s bike ride to meet Comptroller Scanlon at LifeBridge Community Services reminded me of my bike commuting days. And our visit reminded us how important trauma informed work is to the health and resilience of individuals and communities.

Life Bridge, with offices in both Bridgeport and Fairfield, is currently constructing a number of new spaces in order to be able to meet the therapeutic needs of the community. It was wonderful to have the opportunity to hear about their work on site as well as their school partnerships. This is a tremendous resource for City of Bridgeport, CT - Government & Town of Fairfield, CT

Promoting mental health and wellness and addressing trauma and adverse childhood experiences are activities I will always support and champion.
