California’s Summer Food Program for Children , also known as SUN Bucks, provides $120 per eligible child to help families buy food during the summer when school is out. SUN Bucks cards, which work just like CalFresh benefits, will begin arriving in late May and will continue to be delivered through this fall.

Most eligible families do not need to take any action, as children who qualify for free or reduced-price school meals, or receive CalFresh, California Work Opportunity and Responsibility to Kids (CalWORKs), and/or Medi-Cal are automatically enrolled. Children will also be automatically enrolled if their school identifies them as being in foster care, experiencing homelessness, or part of a migrant family.

Families of children who are not automatically enrolled may apply by submitting a school meal application or Universal Benefits Application to their child’s school by August 31, 2026, to receive SUN Bucks benefits for summer 2026.

For cardholder assistance, the SUN Bucks helpline is available 24/7 at (877) 328-9677. Live agents are available Monday through Friday, 6 a.m. – 8 p.m. To check your benefit balance and claim status, visit the California EBT cardholder website.

Pertussis (also known as whooping cough) is a highly contagious bacterial disease that can be spread by coughing. People with pertussis may have severe coughing attacks that can last for months. Newborns are at the highest risk for complications of pertussis.

As whooping cough cases continue to increase in nearby areas, including Monterey County, public health officials are reminding residents to stay up to date on recommended immunizations.

Whooping cough can spread easily and symptoms may vary by age. In children, pertussis often begins with a cough and runny nose for 1–2 weeks before worsening into rapid coughing fits that may end with a “whooping” sound. Young infants may not have a typical cough but can experience episodes where they stop breathing or their face turns red or purple.

Vaccination remains the best protection for children, teens, adults, and pregnant individuals. Adult healthcare workers and individuals who care for infants should make sure they have received at least one dose of the pertussis vaccine (Tdap) to help prevent spreading infection to those most at risk.

Most insurance plans, including Medi-Cal, cover the cost of pertussis immunizations. If your child is entering childcare, kindergarten, or seventh grade this fall, make sure to contact your medical provider early to confirm their immunizations are up to date and meet school entry requirements.

On May 5, 2026, the Solano County Board of Supervisors recognized May 2026 as Older Americans Month in Solano County, honoring an estimated 112,500 residents aged 60 and over whose time, experience, and contributions continue to strengthen families and communities across the County.

This year’s national theme, “Champion Your Health,” highlights prevention, wellness, and personal responsibility as the foundation of healthy aging, encouraging older adults to stay active, engaged, and supported in all aspects of well-being.

The recognition emphasized that communities thrive when families, caregivers, and local partners work together to empower older adults and people with disabilities to lead healthy, independent, and fulfilling lives. It also reaffirmed Solano County’s commitment to providing services and programs that help older adults thrive, including ongoing efforts through the Solano County Master Plan on Aging and Disability to expand access to resources and support healthy aging choices.

On May 5, 2026, the Solano County Board of Supervisors officially recognized May as Mental Health Awareness Month and May 4–10, 2026 as Maternal Mental Health Awareness Week in Solano County.🤱🌸

These observances provide an opportunity to highlight the importance of mental wellness at every stage of life, including during pregnancy and postpartum, while emphasizing early intervention, crisis response, and access to care. In California, 1 in 3 individuals reports symptoms of depression or anxiety during or after pregnancy, underscoring the need for early identification, reducing barriers to care, and strengthening community-based support for individuals and families.

This need is reflected in ongoing efforts across Solano County. In 2025, Solano County Behavioral Health served more than 7,300 individuals with mental health services, while crisis response programs continued supporting adults, youth, and families throughout the county. Solano County also continues to prioritize maternal mental health through its Maternal, Child, and Adolescent Health (MCAH) efforts, including initiatives like Safe Spaces: Enhancing Perinatal Mental Wellness at Home, which expands access to in-home screening, therapy, crisis intervention, and evidence-based support for pregnant and parenting individuals.

Together, these efforts reflect this year’s Mental Health Awareness Month theme, “More Good Days, Together,” and a shared commitment to prevention, support, recovery, and strengthening overall well-being for our community. 💜🌿
