🚨 CONCERNS RAISED RE: FORMER FIRST SELECTWOMAN KUPCHICK'S SEVERANCE PAYMENTS: At a recent Board of Finance (BOF) meeting, bipartisan concern was expressed over a request to transfer over $65K for severance and unused vacation payouts to the former First Selectwoman (who remains on the Town of Fairfield payroll in her role as Selectwoman) and her top appointees. There are several reasons why this policy sets a dangerous precedent that could have far-reaching implications for Fairfield:

1️⃣ CONFLICT OF INTEREST: The possibility of the chief elected official of our Town receiving a severance payment due to losing an election is inappropriate; it creates a conflict of interest and undermines the principles of fair governance.

2️⃣ TRANSPARENCY: BOF members raised several questions about the lack of transparency involved in Ms. Kupchick's approval of the 2021 policy and emphasized the critical importance of transparency in matters of public finance.

3️⃣ PROCESS & VALIDITY: Board members rightfully questioned the process and validity of such payments, particularly given the absence of comparable precedent anywhere in the state as well as inconsistencies with past Town practices.

4️⃣ LEGAL AMBIGUITY: The Board’s need for a legal opinion before proceeding underscores the gravity of the issue. We must ensure that any financial decisions made by our Town are not only ethical but also legally sound.

While investigation into this matter will be conducted to obtain more answers and information, it appears evident that Ms. Kupchick's 2021 policy must be changed. Compensation decisions shouldn't rest solely with the beneficiaries of those decisions, and robust checks & balances are necessary to prevent abuses of power. We thank Fairfield First Selectman Bill Ge**er for assuring that the appropriate process will be followed to amend the policy. We wholeheartedly agree with him that it is inappropriate for the chief elected official of the town to receive a severance payment simply for losing an election.

The successful adoption of Fairfield's Safe and Livable Streets ordinance is the result of elected and community leaders coming together to implement smart solutions to address street safety. After nearly a year of working with residents and professionals who have an in-depth understanding of “Complete Streets” planning and shared right-of-way safety, we have responded to the concerns we heard from everyone who uses local roads. Parents should be able to safely walk their children to school, residents should be able to comfortably bike to work or walk to our downtown without any danger and this ordinance will create better connectivity to ensure that's possible.

I am so grateful for these fantastic advocates for helping to make this improvement for our entire community possible.
