Sometimes releases just don’t go according to plan. 😂

Last night, we released a hit-by-car opossum who had 11 babies with her. We carefully set her up in a crate at the release site and came back this morning to make sure she had moved on.

Well… she was gone alright. But she left ALL 11 of her babies behind! 🤦‍♀️

The bigger baby in the front isn’t hers—he just needed a friend. ❤️

So, welcome to rehab, babies! We sure wish your mama would come back and get you! 😂

Sometimes wildlife rescue means being prepared for anything… even a mama opossum deciding that motherhood was officially over. 🦡❤️

🦝❤️ Happy Recovery Update!

Remember the baby raccoon from Vallejo, CA, who had her head stepped on? We have some wonderful news!

She is healing so well! 🥰 We have moved her from her fully padded enclosure to a slightly padded one, and she is now standing and walking completely on her own without any help. She’s also eating solid foods! 🥹❤️

And here she is after eating her dinner! 🥰🦝❤️

Her skull fracture is still healing, so she has a little more time before she can meet her future friends. Once that fracture has healed, we’ll be able to carefully introduce her to raccoons her own size.

We are so proud of this little fighter! 🦝💪❤️ One step closer to getting back to the wild! 🌿✨

🦦 And he’s off! 🦦

The little otter who was hit by a car in Vacaville, CA, is finally back home where he belongs! ❤️

This rescue truly took a village, and we are so grateful to everyone who helped give this little guy a second chance.

A very special thank you to our wildlife veterinarian, Dr. Valerie Chen, Officer Lord with H.A.S. Humane Animal Services, and the family who stopped to protect him from being hit again.

And a very special thank you to Sonoma County Wildlife Rescue for stepping in when this little otter needed specialized wildlife care. Their experience, dedication, expert rehabilitation, and species-specific housing gave him the safe environment he needed to heal, regain his strength, and prepare for the day he could return home. We are incredibly grateful for everything they did for him. ❤️🦦

💙 A HUGE THANK YOU! 🦦

We want to send a heartfelt thank you to Sonoma County Wildlife Rescue for taking in our adult male river otter and caring for him during his recovery.

After our otter received veterinary care in Solano County, he was sent to Sonoma County Wildlife Rescue. They provided the specialized care he needed, including a species-specific enclosure that allowed him the proper space and environment to recover. They continued caring for him until he was healthy and ready to return to Solano County for release. 🦦💙

We are so grateful for the time, love, expertise, and dedication they gave this beautiful boy. Wildlife rescue truly takes a village, and they helped make his recovery and return to the wild possible.

Our river otter is scheduled to be released today. 🥳
For those of you wondering why we are releasing him only a few miles from where he was located, here is why:

For an adult river otter, releasing it near the area where it was originally found is especially important because adult otters generally have an established home range. Wildlife rehabilitation guidance specifically recommends that adult otters be returned to their established home range whenever possible.

Here’s why:

It knows the area. The otter already knows where to find food, water, shelter, resting spots, and safe places along that waterway.

It knows its territory. Adult river otters can have home ranges covering many miles of waterways.

It may already have established relationships and boundaries. Moving an adult into unfamiliar territory can put it into competition with other otters.

It reduces unnecessary wandering. An adult released far from home may spend valuable energy trying to find suitable habitat or return to its original range.

It improves its chances of survival. Returning an animal to familiar habitat reduces the risks associated with being placed somewhere completely unfamiliar.

It preserves the local population. Returning the otter to the population it came from keeps that animal where it naturally belongs rather than unnecessarily moving it into another population.

In simple terms: An adult river otter isn't just being released somewhere it can live—whenever safe and appropriate, we're trying to return it home. 🦦❤️

Foxboro area near Daybreak Ct. Vacaville, CA. If anyone happens to see this poor baby raccoon with this snap trap on its little hand, please reach out to us asap. The baby is still traveling with its mom and 3 other siblings. Last seen on Saturday night. Thank you.

Early this morning, our vet, Dr. Chen was able to check on several of our wildlife patients in care. 🦝🦊🦡

Our baby raccoon who had her head stepped on is doing well. Her skull fracture was confirmed, but thankfully, she is expected to heal. ❤️

Our little gray fox who got his leg stuck in a fence is also expected to make a full recovery! 🦊

And our little opossum who was attacked has a few puncture wounds, but thankfully, nothing life-threatening. 🩷

We are so grateful for everyone who continues to support us. Because of you, we can continue giving Solano County’s wildlife the best care possible.

This little gray fox got his leg stuck in a fence. Thankfully, he made it to us, and we’re working hard to get him the care he needs. 🐺
