Many drivers are familiar with firefighters’ boots, but they’re usually being carried rather than worn. Ever since firefighters asked people to put donations in a firefighter’s boot for the Muscular Dystrophy Association in 1952, many fire departments use the boot for a variety of fundraising purposes.

Ever hear of something called a Stoll Curve? The Stoll curve was borne out of research done by Alice Stoll and Maria Chianta in the late 50s and early 60s. In a nutshell, their study measured the amount of heat that would produce different degrees of burn injuries.

Halligan bars were designed in 1948 by New York City Deputy Fire Chief Hugh Halligan, but the Boston fire department was the first to use them. NYC firefighters used their own money to stock fire trucks with Halligans, until finally, the city agreed to provide them.

Today, firefighters use fire-hardened tools to fight fires. Archeological evidence indicates the first fire-hardened tools were pointed sticks, probably used as spears. These pointed sticks, placed over open flames or buried in coals, were the precursors to modern steel tools heat-treated for strength and resilience.
