Why do we require applicants to submit a letter of support from the sponsoring organization(s) or proof of the ability to book a venue?

First we do not want to surprise area organizations and venues by booking for them through our grant awards. That disempowers these groups. We let them choose whom they want to work with.

Second we view an applicant who submits a letter or proof as being more committed to their project and more likely to successfully complete their project.

Supplying a letter of support or proof of the ability to book a venue does not guarantee a grant award, but it does guarantee greater consideration, especially for projects demonstrating a benefit for Fairhaven residents.

When we award our grants, we're looking for projects that enrich the cultural lives of Fairhaven's residents. We read applications to see:

1) Where their projects will take place?
2) What is the estimation of our residents' participation?
3) How will applicants market their projects to our community?

We prioritize projects occurring in Fairhaven. Residents are more likely to participate in projects taking place here. According to our 2026 Community Survey, 48% of our respondents have not attended a cultural event outside of Fairhaven in two years.

Most importantly in-town occurring projects fill our community calendar. They stimulate our cultural scene and economy. They help make Fairhaven a destination for greater area residents.

For funding projects, how do we define the arts, humanities, and interpretational sciences? We'll explain what we mean by sciences today!

Sciences are types of learning that deal with nature, science, and technology in ways that explain how they relate to people’s lives. Some organizations that conduct this type of activity include aquariums, botanical gardens, nature centers, natural history museums, planetariums, and science centers.

We hope this three-day series helped demystify what kinds of projects we can fund. Feel free always to reach out to the Fairhaven Cultural Council with your questions!

For funding projects, how do we define the arts, humanities, and interpretational sciences? We'll explain what we mean by humanities today!

Humanities are types of learning that deal with human values and aspirations, human thought and culture, language, and creativity. Examples include, but are not limited to, history, social studies, philosophy, criticism, and literature.

Tomorrow we'll discuss the interpretational sciences. Stay tuned!

Arts refer to the creation of work in the crafts and performing, visual, media, folk, design, literary, and inter-disciplinary arts. The presentation and preservation of and education about works in these disciplines are also included.

We are looking for project proposals in the arts, humanities, and educational sciences. Projects must result in events or programs that benefit Fairhaven residents. Starting soon this morning!

Join us this Saturday at 11am for Mini Big Top with Small But Mighty!

This circus show and workshop will include aerial silks, hula hoop acrobatics, circus jeopardy with prizes, aerial hoop, and some circus-themed book recommendations. After the show there will be a fun interactive segment to teach the kids hula hoop tricks and other ground skills.

Bring a blanket and join us on the lawn this Saturday!
