š¢ **Our first week of class was a success!**
This weekās box turtle lesson had a lot of different parts, and the kids got to see how science actually works in the real world.
First, we learned about box turtles and the kind of habitat they need. Then we used what we had learned to decide where we thought they might be hanging out and headed out to search.
We found three turtles and documented our findings and locations. One of them was a tiny baby box turtle who clearly wasnāt doing well, so our lesson quickly turned into figuring out what was wrong, who we needed to call, what information they would need from us, and what we should do next.
The kids helped take pictures, document where we found her, find the right wildlife center and phone number, and talk through what we needed to tell them. She is now being cared for at theOrange Beach Wildlife Center and once she is all patched up, we will get to release her right back where we found her. š
We also learned how to tell male and female box turtles apart and talked about erosion and the huge role it plays in the Fairhope gully where we were searching.
One little turtle saved, three turtles documented, and a whole lot of hands on learning packed into our first week. šæš¢
