Who’s ready for summer camp? 🌿☀️

At Little Roots, your child can:

• Pick berries from the garden 🍓
• Splash and explore in the creek 💦
• Make new friends 🌼
• Read books under the trees 📚
• Hike through the forest 🌳
• Discover turtles, frogs, lizards, and other wildlife 🐢🐸
• Learn through hands-on adventures every day ✨

Camp starts Monday, and our first week is Reptile & Amphibian Week! We will be exploring the forest, searching for wildlife, and learning all about the amazing turtles that call our campus home.

We only have ONE spot left for Week 1!

Registration for June’s FoodRx is officially OPEN! 🌿
We are excited to present From Forest to Fork with special guest Maria Hoffmann. As the founder of Little Roots, Alabama Foraging Society, and Gulf Coast Roots, Maria has dedicated her work to a simple, beautiful goal: helping us reconnect with the natural world.

In this hands-on class, Maria will teach us how to identify and harvest oyster mushrooms—a native Southeast delicacy found right here in our own hardwood habitats. Afterward, we’ll gather for a plant-forward feast celebrating the flavors of the forest, with vegan options for every single course! 🍄

🍽️ Menu:
• Lion's Mane "Crab" Cakes – golden, pan-seared patties showcasing the remarkable seafood-like texture of local lion's mane mushrooms, seasoned with classic coastal herbs
• Oyster Mushroom Alfredo – sautéed local mushrooms in a traditional creamy Alfredo sauce over pasta (a vegan cashew-cream Alfredo will also be available)
• Greek Salad – crisp romaine, cucumbers, and peppers with house-made dressing
• Roasted Cauliflower – oven-roasted with simple, savory seasoning
• Grilled Peaches – caramelized peaches with candied pecans and whipped coconut cream 🍑

Happy World Turtle Day! 🐢

What better day to acknowledge the box turtle than right in the middle of their mating season. Gulf Coast box turtles are especially active from May through July and we’ve been spotting several around campus this week.

One of the coolest things about box turtles is that they usually spend their entire lives in the same small area. Even though they are mostly terrestrial animals, this time of year you’ll often see them coming out of the forest to cool down in shallow creeks, ponds, and wet areas while they hunt, explore, and search for mates. It’s kind of a social season for them.

We are so excited to use these moments to help teach children about local wildlife and why protecting native habitats matters so much. The more kids learn about the animals around them, the more likely they are to grow up wanting to protect them. 💚🐢

Summer camp is almost here and we are so excited!! ☀️
Little Roots is an outdoor summer camp located in Fairhope, AL.
We have 8 weeks of adventure to choose from!
You can sign up for as many or as few weeks as you like.
Kids will spend their summer hiking and exploring the forest, playing games, building forts, fishing, cast netting, creek playing, creating, and learning through real hands-on experiences outside.
Our campus has a garden, trails, a pond with turtles, and plenty of space for kids to climb, splash, dig, discover, and grow.
We keep our groups small so every child has space to explore, play, learn, and feel connected.
Spots are limited and summer is coming fast!

Centuries ago, dense forests of enormous oaks, pines, and cypress trees covered lower Alabama. Giants that would dwarf the typical trees we encounter today. Some say the Spanish explorers looked to the massive stands of cypress trees as navigation beacons when entering Mobile Bay. A sight on the horizon we could only dream of, as now there is but one of these giant cypress trees remaining, hidden deep within the Delta marsh, surrounded by a brigade of cypress knees. And the only way to reach her is by water.

Reconnecting with our local waterways and natural resources is essential for their protection. At Little Roots, we spend our days fishing, cast netting, swimming, climbing trees, building forts, exploring the creek, playing hard, and learning from the world around us.
