🌙 Flying Creek at Night 🦝🦌

One of the most common questions we receive is: "How has trail development affected wildlife at Flying Creek Nature Preserve?" We’re happy to share that our monitoring efforts continue to show a thriving and active wildlife community throughout the preserve.

Starting this month, we’ll be celebrating Wildlife Wednesday on the first and third Wednesday of each month by sharing photos captured throughout the park. We’ve been monitoring wildlife for more than a year, and the results have been encouraging—many of our wild neighbors continue to call Flying Creek home.

To kick off the series, we’re sharing a few nighttime visitors caught on camera after dark. From curious critters to friendly faces, these photos highlight the incredible wildlife that continues to thrive alongside our trail system. 📸 Take a look at some of the animals we've spotted exploring the preserve after hours, and stay tuned for more Wildlife Wednesday updates!

This weekend, Flying Creek Nature Preserve was honored to welcome the GFWC Jubilee Woman’s Club, who graciously donated two bat boxes to help support our local bat populations. 🦇🌿

Bats play a vital role in maintaining healthy ecosystems. They serve as natural pest control by consuming thousands of insects each night, assist with pollination and seed dispersal, and contribute nutrient-rich fertilizer through their guano. Providing safe roosting habitats helps ensure these important animals can continue benefiting our environment. 🦟🌼🌱

To avoid disturbing bats during their active nesting season, the bat boxes will be installed later this fall. Be sure to keep an eye out for updates as installation approaches, and stay tuned to learn more about the importance of bat conservation and the role these new homes will play at Flying Creek Nature Preserve. 🏞🦇

We are incredibly grateful to the talented local Plein Air artists who recently visited the preserve and generously donated their beautiful artwork 🎨🌿 Their pieces perfectly capture the natural beauty and spirit of the preserve, and we are honored to display them inside our Nature Center.

We cannot wait for everyone to see these wonderful works of art once the Nature Center officially opens 🦋🏞️ Thank you to these artists for sharing their talent, creativity, and love for nature with our community.

Update: A portion of the trail remains closed while crews work as quickly as possible to remove a fallen tree. Thank you for your patience!

Please be aware that a portion of the Primitive Trail at Flying Creek Nature Preserve is temporarily closed today as crews work to safely remove a hazardous fallen tree.

We anticipate this section of the trail will reopen within 24 hours. Thank you for your patience and understanding as we work to keep the preserve safe for all visitors.

This morning, we had the pleasure of welcoming artists from the Fairhope Plein Air group to Flying Creek Nature Preserve 🎨🌿 As they spent time painting throughout the preserve, they captured the beauty and character of our native landscapes in a way that only plein air art can.

We’re especially grateful that several of the artists have generously offered to donate their work for display inside the Nature Center 🖼️ Their pieces will serve as a lasting reflection of the preserve and help connect visitors to the natural environment in a meaningful way.

It’s always encouraging to see local artists inspired by and invested in preserving the places that make our community special 💚🌎

🚨This April we are highlighting the highly invasive Cogon Grass 🚨

Cogon grass (Imperata cylindrica) might look like a soft, fluffy grass—but don’t be fooled. It’s one of the most aggressive invasive plants threatening natural areas across the Southeast.

🌱 Why it’s a problem:
This fast-spreading grass forms dense mats that choke out native plants, damage wildlife habitat, and are extremely difficult to remove once established.

🔥 Hidden danger:
Cogon grass is highly flammable and burns hotter than most native vegetation—raising wildfire risks in parks, forests, and even near neighborhoods.

🌎 Spreading across the South:
States like Alabama and Mississippi are seeing increasing impacts as it takes over roadsides, fields, and natural spaces.

👀 How to spot it:
Tall grass with sharp-edged blades
Off-center white stripe along the leaf
Fluffy white seed heads
