In 1982, seven people in the Chicago area died after taking Tylenol capsules that had been deliberately contaminated with cyanide.

They believed they were taking a safe, familiar medication. They had no reason to suspect otherwise.

The Chicago Tylenol murders changed the way we think about medication safety, tamper-evident packaging, and the responsibility we have to protect patients.

In our latest Life and Sirens episode, we explore this chilling case and the medicine behind it.

As healthcare providers, we memorize the 10 Rights of Medication Administration. But this case reminds us of something important: Medication safety doesn’t begin when we administer a drug. It begins long before it ever reaches the patient.

Check your medications. Inspect your packaging. Question anything that doesn’t look right. And never let familiarity replace vigilance.
