In November 1975, 29 crew members of the Edmund Fitzgerald perished as a storm sank it in the icy water of Lake Superior. The Edmund Fitzgerald was the largest ship on the Great Lakes when it was launched in 1958 and to this day remains the largest ship to have sunk on the lakes. One of Lake County's own, Edward Francis Bindon (1928-1975) of Fairport Harbor, was the Chief Assistant Engineer aboard the ill-fated vessel.
Perhaps it is the plaintive ballad that fixed the tragedy in memory, but residents of the Great Lakes shores know the ship's name, Edmund Fitzgerald, and the story of its sinking on Nov. 10, 1975. Lake County has a special connection to the disaster as Edward Francis Bindon of Fairport Harbor was the engineer aboard the ill-fated vessel. Dan Maxson's November blog post tells the story.http://lakehistorycenter.org/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/LCHS-Nov.-2020-Edmund-Fitzgerald-blog.pdf

Operation Fast Rake in Fairport Harbor went very well today. Many good people showed up to help with the task. Thank you to everyone who volunteered. Also, Glazed Fairport very generously provided some scrumptious donuts for all the volunteers. Our weather was just perfect and everyone had some fun. We do however have a couple of yards that did not get completed today, so we will be heading back to Fairport Harbor tomorrow
(Nov 8th) to complete them. Anyone wanting to volunteer a couple hours tomorrow afternoon can meet us at Fairport High School at 1pm. Thanks again to the volunteers. You all worked very hard today.

DO YOU KNOW WHERE YOUR DD 214 IS?

We receive many calls each week from veterans or their families requesting military discharges (DD 214s). Because we are NOT the VA, we will only have it in our files if the veteran has provided it to us or the Lake County Recorders Office. Our staff will make every effort to help locate this very important document from various resources, but in some cases it may take several weeks or longer to locate. In the case of a veteran's passing, this may not be acceptable.

If you have your DD 214, please keep it in a secure location and make sure your family members know where it is. You may also want to consider providing a copy to our office and recording it with the Recorder.

If you don't have a copy, please contact us for help in locating it. Most discharges are available from the National Personnel Records Center in St. Louis and can be ordered on-line FREE of charge. If you choose to try to order on-line, please be sure you are using www.archives.gov. There are numerous websites not associated with the federal government that will charge you for the document.
Do not use any website that does not end with .gov.

Call us at 440-350-2904 , we can help! Our staff will also be happy to answer any questions about benefits which may be available. As an office of County Government all of our services are provided FREE.

75 years ago today, on August 14, 1945 (or August 15 depending on where you lived around the world), Japanese Emperor Hirohito announced the surrender of Imperial Japan, bringing an end to WWII. While the formal signing of the Instrument of Surrender did not occur until September 2nd aboard the U.S.S. Missouri, word of the surrender reached the President, spread quickly and celebrations broke out around the world. During a time when our large cities are experiencing rioting, protests, and calls to defund or eliminate police from their cities, we are overwhelmed by the support of our Lake County community. On numerous occasions we have received lunches delivered to our Sheriff’s Office by families like the Shipeks last week, and the Miocics today. As well, countless people throughout Lake County have sent us cards and personal letters expressing their support for the work law enforcement performs everyday across our community and sending prayers for our safety and community. Our Facebook posts are filled with thoughts and messages of support.

All of us here at the Lake County Sheriff’s Office are inspired to excel in our service to Lake County by your overwhelming support and we thank you !

"One Potato,Two Potato" is an award-winning 1964 production filmed in Painesville, Ohio. Starring Barbara Barrie & Bernie Hamilton, the Oscar-nominated screenplay about an interracial romance was controversial in its day. Today's audiences may be surprised by the court's decision. The emotional ending is heartbreaking. Robert Earl Jones, father of James Earl Jones, plays Hamilton's father. Robert Earl Jones was blacklisted in the 1950s McCarthy era. Richard Mulligan had his first film role as the ex-husband who abandoned Barrie & their child. (Lake County History Center)

We have been trying to get the war memorial list fixed for 5 years now, have told everyone we could think of, and just ignored. My husband is on there with incorrect spelling of his name, and under no war, he is just listed. He is a vietnam veteran from Fairport, and it should be noted and spelled properly.
