In November 1975, 29 crew members of the Edmund Fitzgerald perished as a storm sank it in the icy water of Lake Superior. The Edmund Fitzgerald was the largest ship on the Great Lakes when it was launched in 1958 and to this day remains the largest ship to have sunk on the lakes. One of Lake County's own, Edward Francis Bindon (1928-1975) of Fairport Harbor, was the Chief Assistant Engineer aboard the ill-fated vessel.
Perhaps it is the plaintive ballad that fixed the tragedy in memory, but residents of the Great Lakes shores know the ship's name, Edmund Fitzgerald, and the story of its sinking on Nov. 10, 1975. Lake County has a special connection to the disaster as Edward Francis Bindon of Fairport Harbor was the engineer aboard the ill-fated vessel. Dan Maxson's November blog post tells the story.http://lakehistorycenter.org/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/LCHS-Nov.-2020-Edmund-Fitzgerald-blog.pdf
