At approximately 1:10 p.m. today, the Fairview Fire Department responded to a report of smoke coming from the attic of a residence in the 9600 block of Ridge Heights Road.

The first emergency unit arrived on the scene within four minutes of dispatch, discovering active flames on the exterior of the structure near the roofline. The fire was beginning to spread into the attic.

Firefighters immediately initiated an exterior attack, bringing the fire under control quickly and containing the damage strictly to the roof and attic areas.

Two occupants were inside the home when the fire broke out; both escaped safely and without injury.

Due to extreme outdoor temperatures, additional departments were dispatched to the scene to ensure the safety and proper rotation of firefighting personnel. A robust, multi-agency response followed to assist with scene management and community coverage.

O’Fallon Fire Department
Signal Hill Fire Department
Northwest Fire Department
MedStar Ambulance

Additionally, the Swansea Fire Department manned a Fairview firehouse during the incident to ensure uninterrupted emergency coverage for the rest of the community.

We would like to extend our deepest gratitude to all of our mutual aid partners and responding departments for their rapid assistance today. Their support was vital in safely extinguishing this fire during these challenging weather conditions.

No civilian or firefighter injuries or fatalities were reported. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

The "Illinois" Rule

Let’s address the elephant in the sky. We know some of you took a little road trip across the state line recently. We aren't the police, but we are the guys who have to put out your roof if things go sideways.

Allowed: Sparklers, smoke bombs, and those little tanks that shoot out colored sparks (keep these on flat, concrete surfaces).

Not Allowed: Anything that goes BOOM, anything that flies through the air, and anything purchased out-of-state that makes your garage look like a munitions depot. If it flies, let it fly right out of the Land of Lincoln.

Pro-Tips for Staying Out of the ER

Water, Water, Everywhere: Keep a bucket of water or a garden hose nearby. Douse all fireworks in water before throwing them in the trash. The only thing worse than a firework going off too early is a trash can fire at 2:00 AM.

Alcohol & Explosives Don't Mix: If you’ve had a few adult beverages, hand the lighter to the designated (and sober) backyard pyrotechnician. Trust us on this one.

The "One and Done" Rule: If a firework doesn't go off, do not run up and peek into it like a cartoon character. It is not "sleeping." It is a ticking time bomb. Soak it from a distance and walk away.

Protect the Paws: Your dog doesn't care about freedom as much as you do. The loud noises terrify them. Keep your pets indoors, preferably with some nice, soothing jazz playing.

As we are in the middle of this Memorial Day weekend, your Fairview Firefighters want to take a moment to pause, reflect, and honor the true meaning of this day.

While many of us are firing up the grills, enjoying the sunshine, or spending well-deserved time with family, our hearts are with the brave men and women who never made it back to theirs.

To the soldiers, sailors, airmen, marines, and coast guardsmen who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our country, we owe you a debt of gratitude that can never truly be repaid. Your courage is our shield, and your sacrifice is the foundation of our freedom.

As first responders, we understand the sacred vow to protect and serve. We stand in awe of those who took that vow on the global stage and gave their all.

To the Gold Star families in our Fairview Heights community and across the nation: We see you. We honor your pain, and we promise to never let the names of your loved ones fade into history.
