Dry conditions and elevated temperatures are driving overly high for conditions for NW Oklahoma. Combined with the abundant fire load this presents extreme risk for wildfire throughout the month of March.

Be vigilant and be safe.

❗️Major County task force has been requested at Mooreland for a large wildfire. Before we could leave, another large fire started near Ames. All county departments currently enroute to Ames to tackle that fire before we send crews west to Mooreland.

We try not to sound the alarm and understand landowners want to burn, but today was a prime example of unheeded advice. A landowner inquired about burn ban status and was advised we are currently under no burn restrictions, but open burning was not suggested.

At 15:10 FFD was dispatched east of Fairview to this property for a controlled burn that lost containment and burned onto an adjacent property. Unfortunately, some damage was sustained to an outbuilding on the adjacent property. While we understand mistakes happen, we try to provide appropriate warnings as weather and conditions dictate.

That said, for those across the county that burned today, and there were over a half dozen, please ensure your fires are properly extinguished before tomorrow’s horrendous winds. We’d hate to see a repeat of lost and damaged property to you or your neighbors tomorrow.

Don’t let the morning fool you, today is not a great day to burn. Why? Because rarely do farmers get their fires 100% extinguished. Rarely are adequate fire breaks created, and rarely are adequate water supplies and manpower on scene to control them.

Why does this matter today…..because tomorrow is coming. Tomorrow will bring sustained winds of 20-30mph with gusts upwards of 60mph. Relative humidities near the teens will prompt rapid and unpredictable fire growth.

If you don’t want to see us tomorrow, please don’t burn today. Be a considerate neighbor and burn another day that won’t be followed by red flag conditions. We mean no disrespect to our farm and ranch community or your experience, but we know what tomorrow likely holds.
